My phone buzzed in my pocket as I was checking fences along field b after the wranglers went through and fixed it. I fumbled with it clicking the answer button.
"Jessie i've called you about 20 times" John sighed into the phone.
"Sorry Sir, i'm out making sure the boys didn't fuck anything up" I replied tightening my grip on Mays reins.
"I need you to come up to the house. I have Kayce here and I need to talk to you about some things" He said quickly hanging up the phone not letting me respond. I didn't really want to see Kayce. It had been four days and he hasn't said a single word about me telling him to make a choice. I just don't want it to be awkward anymore.
Flashback:
"Kace wait up!!" I shrieked lifting my dress up to keep from tripping over it as I ran after him.
"Hurry Jessie we're going to miss it" He stopped to let me catch up to him.
"It's hard to run this quick in a dress" I smiled looking down at my battered up dress from being outside all day.
"Well let me help you out with that" He gripped the part of the dress that was at my thighs and ripped it across making it significantly shorter and easier to move.
"Kayce Dutton!" I slapped his arm "This is my good dress" I smiled.
"Yeah right Jessie it's caked with dirt!" He chuckled grabbing my hand and continuing down the path. I didn't know where he was taking me but it was always an adventure with him.
The sun had started to go down and Kayce was still moving through the woods with my hand in his. We were already out way past curfew and I knew I was going to get shit once I got back to the bunkhouse.
"We're almost there Jess I promise" He squeezed my hand and we finally got out of the woods into one of the old horse pastures. He sat us down in the long grass and sprawled out.
"Uh Kace what are we doing here" I questioned leaning my head onto his shoulder.
"Shh just watch" He whispered pointing just ahead. A moose peaked its head around the corner of a tree and sauntered slowly out into the open. Behind it what looked like its baby followed en-suite stumbling along. I gasped almost too loudly because both moose stopped in their tracks. Kayce nudged me slightly as if to scold me for not being quiet. He turned his head toward me and he looked down at my lips. I had never kissed a guy let alone even be near one this long that wasn't my brother or a 30 year old wrangler.
"You're beautiful Jessie" Kayce smirked placing his hand onto my cheek. My face was on fire I had to turn my gaze onto something else. Anything other than his gorgeous eyes and chiseled face.
"You know this is my first time seeing something like this" I changed the subject quickly not sure how to respond.
"That's why I want to help you experience life Jessie. There's more to it than this place. You haven't left here in 6 years I mean don't you feel like you're missing out" Kayce sighed dropping his hand from my cheek.
"I don't expect you understand the circumstances Kayce I mean everything has been handed to you your whole life. You can leave whenever but I can't that's just not an option" I argued.
"Jessie you have free will, you're not fucking trapped here for all eternity" Kayce stood up not caring if he spooked the moose still grazing in the distance.
"Actually I can't just leave this place Kayce and I don't expect you to understand that" I could feel tears poking through the corner of my eyes.
