{Mercy's POV}
Shannon and I made our way toward HQ. Passerby saw me and quickly averted their eyes. They all saw me as a monster after what I pulled, and I hated it. They saw me for the monster that I was.
Shannon must have noticed, because he quickly nudged my arm.
"Don't be so hard on yourself," he chuckled. "Just be happy you're finally going to be apart of the team.""I think you're just happy you're apart of the team," I laughed hollowly as Headquarters was finally in sight.
"If I had it my way I'd sit out for this one," Shannon said sheepishly as he pulled in a deep breath.
"Why's that?"
"Something about super soldiers gets to me," he admitted. "Fighting big, nasty Titans is one thing but fighting people? That's a whole different-"
"But Titans are people," I corrected. "Well, they were people, I suppose."
"Well, these super soldiers are people."
"You're just a coward," I chuckled, but my laugh didn't reach my eyes.I looked up at the sky. It was a beautiful evening. The sun was toppling the walls. I'd spent the whole day packing and getting moved back to the Scout Regiment and was so happy to be home.
Shannon and I continued to walk in silence for some time before we stopped at the Headquarter steps. We both stared up at the giant entry doors in front of us.
"Are you nervous?" he asked as I could feel him looking at me and I shook my head.
"Why would I be?"
"You're going to see some faces you haven't seen in months," he said softly and my expression hardened.
"Guess they're the ones who should be nervous, not me," I said flatly as I realized he meant all of my friends from my squad were in there.
I took a deep breath and walked into HQ with my head held high.
Armin and my friends were already waiting inside at the table, going over plans and weapons. The fight was only days away, and we had little time to get the odds and ends figured out.
Shannon was by my side as every head in the room turned to me.
All I could see were their terrified eyes when I almost killed them. I had turned on my friends from the goddamn device my father put in my head and it haunted me everyday.
I wondered if it haunted them too as their murmurs turned to silence.
"Mercy!" Sasha exclaimed before abruptly getting up from the table and heading toward me. She wrapped her arms around me, but I couldn't bring myself to hug her. I couldn't let them know how much I cared about them, and I felt guilty for putting all of their lives in danger.
