I opened the door to Chey and Rufaro, the impromptu visit putting an instant smile on my face. Thanks to the day's cold, wet weather, both girls were in stylish hoodie dresses Cheyenne had crocheted using blanket yarn and I immediately let her know I needed one too. Faro wasted no time on pleasantries, she ran into the living room to find Sunshine, the colourful beads in the mini twists on her head smacking against each other as she went.
"Hi to you too, little one," I giggled at the antics before turning to properly greet my sister. "Hey, Chey Chey. What brings you here?"
"Hey, girl. Just came to see you while you still have time for me. I hope I'm not disturbing anything. Also, is there any chance you've got some wings I can nibble on?" Cheyenne asked like it was the most normal thing for her to be talking about chicken.
"Wings?"
"Yeah, I'm in the mood for chicken wings."
"And you came here?" I shot back. "Sorry, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any vegan wings in this joint, ma'am."
Chey playfully rolled her eyes and went over to the couch to take a seat. "I mean the real thing, Toya." she laughed. "I'm having a cheat day, and I would really love it if you made your famous wings."
I stared at her disbelievingly, my voice incredulous as I retorted with, "Chey, I'm pretty sure the first and last time you cheated was that day when you visited me in K-City and didn't have the guts to tell me you were vegetarian."
"So?" she asked absentmindedly, her focus on Rufaro, who she firmly reprimanded, saying, "Faro, stop squeezing the cat, he's not a toy."
"So..." I said when I finally had her attention again,"you don't think it's weird that you're suddenly going out of your way to eat real chicken?"
"It's just a craving I can't shake." she countered innocently. "I've been denying myself for weeks now, Toya. One day won't hurt."
"Weeks, huh?" I deadpanned with a raised eyebrow, staring at her until her brainwaves caught up to mine.
"No." she exhaled when she finally realised where I was going with my question, her cheeks heating up as she covered her mouth with her hand. "You think ndili ndi mimba?"
"Welcome to the conversation, Cheyenne." I teased, clapping my hands and laughing as I dodged the cushion she threw at me.
"Toya don't even joke like that." Chey said like the very thought was scary to her.
"But seriously, what else could it be? You're married, and I'm pretty sure you've been doing what married people do." I giggled. "I mean, I've been doing what married people do and I'm not even married."
"What do married people do, Toya?" Faro asked, making this whole thing even funnier to me. I told her not to worry about it and took her and Sunshine to the balcony, where I kept a few toys for both of them, as well as a box of paper and stationery for Faro to keep herself busy whenever she came over.
