Jungwon stood behind the counter at Stary Café, wiping down the already spotless surface with a practiced hand. It was early—too early for most people to be awake, let alone out and about. But Stary Café had its regulars who would come by even at 7:35 on a Sunday morning, seeking comfort in the warmth of a fresh brew.
The café was small, tucked away on a quiet street, and had a cozy charm with its rustic wooden furniture and soft, ambient lighting. Jungwon appreciated the quiet mornings, where he could just enjoy the silence before the usual rush of college students and locals.
Jake and Sunoo were in the back, chatting as they prepped the pastries for the day. Their laughter occasionally filtered out into the main area, breaking the peaceful silence. They were good friends—had been since their first year of college. All three of them had somehow ended up working at Stary Café, balancing their studies with the need to pay rent and keep some semblance of a social life.
Jungwon’s thoughts were interrupted by the soft chime of the door as it swung open. He straightened up, ready to greet the early customer.
The man who walked in was someone Jungwon had never seen before, but there was something about him that immediately captured his attention. He was tall, with a striking presence that seemed to command the room. His sharp suit was impeccably tailored, fitting him perfectly. Everything about him screamed wealth and power, from the watch on his wrist to the air of confidence with which he carried himself.
Jungwon’s breath caught in his throat for a moment. He wasn’t one to believe in love at first sight—or in any of those romantic notions his friends always teased him about. But there was something about this man that made him pause, made his heart skip a beat in a way that he couldn’t quite explain.
The man approached the counter, his eyes briefly scanning the menu before they landed on Jungwon. For a moment, their eyes met, and Jungwon felt a shiver run down his spine. The man’s gaze was intense, as if he could see right through him.
“Good morning,” the man said, his voice smooth and deep. “I’ll have an Americano.”
Jungwon nodded, snapping out of whatever trance he had been in. “Of course, sir. That’ll be just a moment.”
As he prepared the coffee, he couldn’t help but steal glances at the man. Who was he? Jungwon couldn’t shake the feeling that this was someone important, someone whose life was far removed from the simplicity of a small café in a quiet neighborhood.
When the coffee was ready, Jungwon placed it on the counter with a small smile. “Here you go.”
The man took the cup, his fingers brushing against Jungwon’s for the briefest of moments. “Thank you,” he said, and there was something in his tone that made Jungwon’s heart flutter again.
The man lingered for a moment, as if he wanted to say something more, but then he simply nodded and turned to leave. As the door closed behind him, Jungwon let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding.
Jake and Sunoo emerged from the back, both grinning as they approached the counter. “Who was that?” Sunoo asked, nudging Jungwon with his elbow.
“I have no idea,” Jungwon replied, still staring at the door. “But…I think I’ve just met the most interesting person in this entire city.”
Jake raised an eyebrow. “You? Interested in someone? This is new.”
Jungwon rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t deny the truth in Jake’s words. There was something about that man that had stirred something within him, something he couldn’t quite put into words. And as he went back to his work, he couldn’t help but wonder if he would ever see him again.
But what Jungwon didn’t know was that this brief encounter was just the beginning—of something much bigger, much more complicated than he could ever have imagined.
