It was a quiet afternoon at Stary Café, the cozy little shop where Jungwon, Jake, and Sunoo worked to help cover their college expenses. The café had become more than just a job for them—it was a place where they could laugh, vent, and share stories about their lives. And now, with each of them in relationships, the café had become the backdrop for countless conversations about their new adventures in love.
Today, the café was peaceful, with only a few customers lounging at the tables, sipping coffee and working on their laptops. The soft hum of the espresso machine filled the air, and sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow across the wooden floors.
Sunoo was behind the counter, wiping down surfaces with his usual cheerful energy, while Jake sat at one of the tables, flipping through the menu absentmindedly. Jungwon, who had been on break, leaned against the counter, sipping on a coffee and looking lost in thought.
Jake glanced up from the menu, noticing the faraway look in Jungwon’s eyes. “You okay, Jungwon?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. “You’ve been quiet today.”
Sunoo perked up at Jake’s words, immediately curious. “Yeah, you’ve been in your head all afternoon. What’s up?”
Jungwon sighed, setting his coffee down and glancing between his two best friends. He had been thinking about something for a while now, something he hadn’t shared with Jake or Sunoo. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized he couldn’t keep it to himself any longer.
“There’s something I need to tell you guys,” Jungwon said slowly, his voice a little hesitant. “It’s about Jay.”
Jake and Sunoo exchanged curious looks, then both leaned in, their interest clearly piqued. “What is it?” Sunoo asked, his eyes wide with anticipation. “Did something happen?”
Jungwon chuckled softly, shaking his head. “Not exactly... well, sort of. It’s something that happened a while ago. On our first date, actually.”
Jake’s eyes widened, and Sunoo immediately perked up even more, practically bouncing in place. “Ooh, spill the details! What did Jay do?” Sunoo asked excitedly.
Jungwon hesitated for a moment, then let out a soft laugh. “Okay, so... you know how Jay is. He’s generous, and he likes to show that he cares through... grand gestures.”
Jake snorted, leaning back in his chair. “Yeah, we’ve noticed. The guy’s practically a billionaire Santa Claus.”
Sunoo giggled. “Yeah! But what did he do on your first date? That was a while ago.”
Jungwon bit his lip, feeling a little awkward as he recalled the memory. “Well... at the end of the date, Jay gave me something. It was... it was a black card.”
The café went silent for a moment, the words hanging in the air like a bomb that had just dropped. Sunoo’s eyes widened, and Jake’s jaw dropped in shock.
“A black card?” Jake repeated, his voice laced with disbelief. “As in, the kind of card that has no spending limit?”
Jungwon nodded slowly, feeling a little self-conscious. “Yeah. That kind of card.”
Sunoo’s mouth dropped open in shock, his hand flying to his chest dramatically. “No way! He gave you a black card on your first date? That’s insane!”
Jake let out a low whistle, leaning forward and shaking his head in disbelief. “Wow, that’s... that’s a lot. What did you do?”
Jungwon sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t use it. It’s too much, you know? I mean, I appreciate the gesture, but I can’t just go around using a black card. It feels... I don’t know, too much.”
Sunoo blinked, still processing the information. “You’re telling me you’ve had a black card all this time and you haven’t used it even once?”
Jungwon shook his head, looking almost embarrassed. “No, I haven’t. I don’t need to. It’s... it’s just too much, you know? I like Jay for who he is, not for what he can buy me.”
Jake, still stunned, let out a soft laugh. “I guess that’s why Jay likes you so much. Most people would’ve gone on a shopping spree by now.”
Jungwon smiled sheepishly. “Yeah, well... I don’t need all that. I just want to spend time with him, you know?”
Sunoo, ever the romantic, sighed dreamily. “That’s so sweet, Jungwon. You’re like the perfect boyfriend! You’re not interested in his money, just him.”
Jungwon chuckled, feeling his cheeks flush a little. “It’s not that big of a deal, really. I just... don’t want to take advantage of what he has. I want things between us to stay real.”
Jake nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. “I get it. But still... that’s a huge gesture from him. It shows how much he trusts you.”
Jungwon sighed, nodding in agreement. “Yeah, it does. I mean, I know he meant well. It’s just... I don’t know if I’ll ever be comfortable using something like that.”
Sunoo grinned, resting his elbows on the counter as he looked at Jungwon with admiration. “You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, Jungwon. But... if you ever decide to use that card, can I come along for the ride?”
Jungwon laughed, shaking his head. “You’re unbelievable, Sunoo.”
Jake chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “I’ve gotta say, though... it’s kind of impressive that you’ve managed to resist the temptation. I don’t know if I could have.”
Jungwon shrugged, smiling softly. “It’s not really about that for me. I like the simple things with Jay. I don’t need all the extra stuff.”
The three of them fell into a comfortable silence for a moment, the buzz of the café filling the air around them. Sunoo’s eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned closer to Jungwon again. “But you still have the card, right? Just... in case?”
Jungwon rolled his eyes but couldn’t stop the small smile from forming on his lips. “Yes, Sunoo. I still have the card.”
Jake snorted, shaking his head. “If anyone ever deserved a black card, it’s you, Jungwon.”
Sunoo nodded enthusiastically. “Exactly! You’re so humble. But if you ever do decide to use it, we’ve gotta make it a day out. Just the three of us. We’ll call it ‘The Black Card Adventure.’”
Jungwon groaned, but the laughter bubbling up from his friends was infectious. Before long, the three of them were laughing together, the weight of the confession lifted by the familiar warmth of their friendship.
As the day went on, they returned to their usual routine at the café, serving customers and chatting about school. But there was a lightness in the air that hadn’t been there before—a sense of shared understanding and trust.
Jungwon didn’t need the black card to feel secure in his relationship with Jay, and that was enough. What mattered most to him was that, no matter what grand gestures Jay made, their connection was built on something real—something that couldn’t be bought.
