Jungwon’s day at school had been as routine as ever. He sat through lectures, took notes diligently, and tried not to let his mind wander too much. But no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept drifting back to the mysterious man from the café. It was ridiculous, he told himself, to be so fixated on a stranger he had exchanged only a few words with. Yet, the memory of those intense eyes and that brief touch lingered in his mind like a faint echo.
He wasn’t the type to be easily distracted, but today was different. Even Jake and Sunoo had noticed his unusual quietness during lunch, but they didn’t press him about it, assuming he was just tired from the early shift.
The day dragged on, with lectures blurring into one another. When the final bell rang, signaling the end of classes, Jungwon let out a sigh of relief. He packed up his books and met up with Jake and Sunoo outside the lecture hall.
“Finally done for the day,” Jake groaned, stretching his arms above his head. “What do you guys want to do? Grab some dinner?”
“I could eat,” Sunoo agreed, but his gaze shifted to Jungwon. “How about you, Won? You’ve been quiet all day. Everything okay?”
Jungwon forced a smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just…tired, I guess.”
Sunoo gave him a skeptical look but didn’t push the issue. Instead, he linked his arm through Jungwon’s. “Let’s go then! We deserve a good meal after all that studying.”
They decided on a small, popular restaurant near campus. The place was bustling with students like themselves, looking to unwind after a long day of classes. The three of them found a table near the window and ordered their food, chatting casually about the day and their plans for the weekend.
But even as he laughed along with his friends, Jungwon couldn’t shake the feeling that something—someone—was missing. His mind kept wandering back to the man from the café, and he found himself glancing at the door every time it opened, half-expecting to see him walk in.
Dinner passed in a blur, and soon they were heading out into the cool evening air. The streets were alive with the usual bustle of students heading to and from various hangouts. As they walked, Sunoo pulled out his phone, checking the time.
“I’ve got to get back home,” Sunoo said with a sigh. “Got a project due tomorrow, and I haven’t even started.”
“Procrastinator,” Jake teased, earning a playful shove from Sunoo.
Jungwon chuckled. “I should head home too. I’ve got some reading to catch up on.”
They parted ways at the corner, with promises to meet up again soon. As Jungwon walked down the quiet street leading to his apartment, he felt a strange sense of anticipation bubbling up inside him. He wasn’t sure why, but it was as if the universe was telling him that something was about to happen.
Lost in his thoughts, he almost didn’t notice the sleek black car parked near his building. It wasn’t the kind of car you often saw in this part of town—too expensive, too out of place. But what caught his attention even more was the man standing beside it, leaning casually against the hood.
It was him. The man from the café.
Jungwon’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes met. For a moment, he thought he might be dreaming—what were the chances of running into this man again, especially here?
The man straightened up, his expression unreadable. “Jungwon,” he said, his voice smooth and familiar, yet with an edge of something that made Jungwon’s pulse quicken.
“How…how do you know my name?” Jungwon asked, stepping closer despite the wariness in his voice.
The man smiled faintly, almost as if he found Jungwon’s confusion amusing. “I have my ways,” he replied, then gestured toward the car. “Care to join me for a drive?”
Jungwon hesitated. Everything about this situation screamed danger, yet there was something about the man that made it hard to say no. The rational part of him was telling him to decline, to walk away and forget this ever happened. But the part of him that had been thinking about this man all day—the part that felt an inexplicable pull toward him—was louder.
After a moment, Jungwon nodded. “Okay.”
The man opened the passenger door for him, and Jungwon slid into the luxurious leather seat. As the car pulled away from the curb, he couldn’t help but feel like he was stepping into something far bigger than himself—something that could change his life in ways he couldn’t yet comprehend.
The man didn’t speak for a while, his focus on the road, but there was an undeniable tension in the air, an energy that made Jungwon’s skin tingle with anticipation. Finally, the man glanced over at him, a small, knowing smile playing on his lips.
“I’m Jay,” he said, as if his name alone explained everything.
And in that moment, Jungwon knew that nothing in his life would ever be the same again.
