The night of Valentine’s Day had been magical for Jungwon and Jay, but there was another pair who had felt the shift in the air. Sunoo and Niki, although they hadn’t shared a kiss like Jungwon and Jay, had felt something lingering between them that could no longer be ignored.
Sunoo had noticed how different Niki had been around him lately—more playful than usual, but also softer, more attentive. It confused him at first, but as the night wore on and he watched the way Niki’s eyes lingered on him, it became harder to ignore. There was a deeper connection forming, one that neither of them had acknowledged until now.
The evening had quieted down, and most of the others had drifted to different parts of the hall. Jungwon and Jay were lost in their own world, while Jake was talking animatedly with Heeseung and Sunghoon. Sunoo found himself sitting on one of the plush couches near the window, sipping on some sparkling water, watching the city lights twinkle in the distance.
Niki approached him quietly, his usual teasing grin replaced by something more serious, more focused. He sat down beside Sunoo, leaving a small space between them, but his presence felt heavy, charged.
"Hey," Niki said, his voice unusually soft. "Are you okay? You’ve been quiet all night."
Sunoo blinked, surprised by the question. He hadn’t realized he’d been so quiet, but something about the day had made him feel more reflective. "Yeah, I’m fine. Just... thinking."
Niki tilted his head, his dark eyes studying Sunoo’s face carefully. "Thinking about what?"
Sunoo glanced at him, biting his lip. "About today... about everything that’s been happening between us."
Niki’s eyes widened slightly, but he didn’t look away. He seemed to be waiting for Sunoo to continue.
Taking a deep breath, Sunoo sat up straighter and looked directly at him. "Niki, you’ve been acting... different around me lately. And I’m not sure how to feel about it."
Niki’s gaze softened, and he leaned in just a little closer, the space between them shrinking. "Different? How so?"
"You know what I mean," Sunoo said, his voice quieter now. "You’re not teasing me like you used to. You’re... I don’t know, it feels like you’ve been more... gentle?"
Niki chuckled softly, his eyes flickering with something Sunoo couldn’t quite read. "I guess I have."
Sunoo raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
Niki let out a long sigh, running a hand through his hair. He seemed to be gathering his thoughts, like he didn’t want to mess this up. "Because, Sunoo... I don’t know how to act around you anymore. Not after everything. Not after I realized..."
"Realized what?" Sunoo’s heart was beating faster now, his hands fidgeting nervously in his lap. He had a feeling he knew where this was going, but he needed to hear Niki say it.
Niki hesitated for a moment, then finally looked into Sunoo’s eyes, his gaze intense and unwavering. "That I like you. More than I thought I would."
Sunoo’s breath caught in his throat. He opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out. Niki, noticing Sunoo’s sudden silence, rushed to continue.
"I mean, I’ve always liked you. You’re fun to be around, and we’ve always been close, but..." Niki trailed off, his voice dropping into a whisper. "It’s different now. I can’t stop thinking about you. Every time I see you, I just... want to be near you. I want to make you smile. I didn’t realize how much until recently."
Sunoo’s chest tightened, warmth spreading through him at Niki’s words. This was the confession he had never expected but somehow, deep down, had always hoped for. Niki’s playful nature had always been part of their dynamic, but now it seemed like there was so much more beneath the surface.
Niki shifted closer, their knees brushing together, and the sudden proximity made Sunoo’s heart race even faster. "I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell you. I didn’t want to mess things up between us."
Sunoo blinked, trying to process everything. "You like me?"
Niki gave him a soft smile, one that made Sunoo’s stomach flip. "Yeah. I really like you, Sunoo. And I’m tired of pretending that I don’t."
For a moment, Sunoo was completely speechless. He had always enjoyed Niki’s company, loved their playful banter, but this... this was something else. He had never thought Niki felt the same way he did. And now, knowing that he did, it made everything feel so much more real.
Sunoo’s hand moved on its own, reaching out to rest on Niki’s arm. "I... I like you too," he admitted, his voice small but sincere. "I didn’t know how to say it either."
Niki’s eyes lit up with surprise and relief. "Really?"
Sunoo nodded, his cheeks burning with embarrassment but also with happiness. "Yeah. I didn’t realize it at first, but... I kept thinking about you. Even when you weren’t around."
Niki let out a soft laugh, his hand reaching out to gently hold Sunoo’s. "Well, that makes two of us, then."
They sat there for a moment, the air between them heavy with unspoken words, but also lighter, freer. Sunoo could feel the tension that had been building for weeks finally melting away.
Niki, always one to act on impulse, leaned in, his forehead resting gently against Sunoo’s. "I’m glad you feel the same way," he whispered, his breath warm against Sunoo’s skin. "Because I don’t think I could have kept this to myself any longer."
Sunoo smiled, a soft, contented smile, and closed his eyes for a moment, letting the warmth of Niki’s presence wash over him. "I’m glad too," he whispered back.
Niki pulled back slightly, his dark eyes locking onto Sunoo’s once again. "So, what now?"
Sunoo chuckled softly, squeezing Niki’s hand. "I guess we just... figure it out together."
Niki grinned, his playful side surfacing once more. "I like the sound of that."
As they sat there, hands intertwined, it felt like the start of something new. Something exciting. And for once, Sunoo wasn’t scared of what came next. Because he had Niki by his side.
