Jungwon sat in the back of the lecture hall, trying to focus on the professor's voice droning on about economic theories, but his mind was miles away. The platinum card in his pocket felt like it weighed a ton, a constant reminder of the surreal encounter he had with Jay the night before. He hadn’t slept much, his thoughts racing as he tried to make sense of everything.
How had his life taken such a wild turn in such a short time?
When the class finally ended, Jungwon gathered his things and made his way to the cafeteria where he was supposed to meet Jake and Sunoo. His heart was pounding, nerves twisting his stomach into knots. He knew he couldn’t keep this a secret from his friends—they’d notice something was up anyway. But how was he supposed to explain the sudden appearance of a billionaire in his life?
As he walked through the crowded cafeteria, he spotted Jake and Sunoo at their usual table by the window. Sunoo was waving him over enthusiastically, while Jake seemed preoccupied with his phone. Jungwon took a deep breath, steeling himself, and walked over to join them.
“Hey, you’re finally here!” Sunoo chirped as Jungwon sat down. “We’ve been waiting forever. What took you so long?”
Jungwon forced a smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Just got caught up with something.”
Jake looked up from his phone, noticing the tension in Jungwon’s expression. “You okay, man? You’ve been acting weird since yesterday.”
Sunoo’s eyes narrowed in suspicion as he leaned forward. “Yeah, seriously. You’ve been all quiet and mysterious. Did something happen?”
Jungwon bit his lip, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of his tray. He glanced around to make sure no one was paying attention before he leaned in closer. “I… I need to tell you guys something,” he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jake and Sunoo exchanged worried looks, and Jake set his phone down, giving Jungwon his full attention. “What’s going on, Won? You’re starting to freak us out.”
Jungwon took a deep breath, then finally said the words that had been circling in his mind all morning. “I met someone. Someone… important.”
Sunoo’s eyes lit up with curiosity. “Important? Like, a professor? A celebrity? What do you mean?”
Jungwon shook his head. “No, not like that. I met him at the café yesterday morning, and then… I saw him again last night.”
Jake frowned, his concern deepening. “Wait, you saw him again? Who is this guy?”
Jungwon hesitated, the weight of what he was about to reveal pressing down on him. But there was no turning back now. “His name is Jay,” he began slowly, “and… he’s a billionaire.”
There was a moment of stunned silence as Jake and Sunoo processed this information. Sunoo was the first to react, his eyes widening in disbelief. “Wait, what? A billionaire? Are you serious?”
Jungwon nodded, feeling a strange mix of embarrassment and anxiety. “Yeah. He owns a bunch of companies, has houses all over the world… He’s really rich.”
Jake blinked, trying to wrap his head around it. “Okay, but why would a billionaire be hanging out at our café? And more importantly, why is he interested in you?”
Jungwon winced at the bluntness of Jake’s question, but he knew it was fair. “I don’t really know,” he admitted. “He said I was… different. That I intrigued him.”
Sunoo let out a low whistle, shaking his head in disbelief. “Wow. That’s… crazy. So, what happened next? Did he ask you out or something?”
Jungwon’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Not exactly. He… offered to take care of me. Like, financially.”
