[EVERRIDGE BASKETBALL COURT - AFTERNOON]
The sound of sneakers squeaking against the court fills the air. The basketball soaring through the air, swishing perfectly through the hoop. Jace, tall, athletic, and confident, grins as his teammates cheer.
Basketball wasn't just a game for Jace. It was his escape, his passion, the one place where he felt completely in control. On the court, life's problems faded into the background, replaced by the rhythm of the game.
Jace claps hands with his teammates, exchanging smiles and encouragement. His best friend, Aiden, a fellow player, slaps him on the back.
AIDEN
(grinning) "Man, you're on fire today! Nag pa-practice ka ba without us or something?"JACE
(chuckling) "Just in the zone, I guess. We've got to bring our A-game if we're going to take the championship this year."They jog back to their positions, ready for another play. Jace's focus sharpens as he surveys the court, the intensity of the game taking over.
[JACE'S HOUSE - NIGHT]
Jace arriving home, still in his practice clothes, the energy from the game still buzzing in his veins. He opens the front door to the sound of laughter and the smell of dinner cooking.
But off the court, life was a different game - one with no clear rules, and where the stakes felt even higher.
Jace's Mother Maricris Lim, a warm and caring woman, is setting the table, while his Step-Father Lewis Lim is helping in the kitchen. His younger siblings, Lucas and Emma Lim, are playing a board game at the dining table.
MARICRIS
(smiling) "Kumusta practice, Jace?"JACE
(placing his bag down) "Goods, Ma. The team's looking strong."LEWIS
(teasing) "So, you're gonna bring home that trophy this year, huh?"JACE
(grinning) "Ayon po ang plano."His Step-Father gives him a thumbs-up as Jace walks over to the table, ruffling Lucas' hair and giving Emma a quick hug.
EMMA
(excited) "Kuya Jace!, can you play with us after dinner?"JACE
(smiling) "Sure thing, bunso! But don't go easy on me."The family sits down for dinner, the atmosphere warm and full of love. Jace watches his family with a mix of happiness and responsibility, knowing he's the eldest and feeling the unspoken pressure that comes with it.
As the eldest, Jace felt the weight of his family's expectations. He was the one his younger siblings looked up to, the one his mother relied on. And even though his step-father treated him like his own, Jace never forgot the role he had to play.
Jace starts eating, his smile genuine but his eyes hinting at deeper thoughts. His Mother notices and reaches out to touch his hand.
MARICRIS
(softly) "Okay ka lang ba, Jace?"JACE
(quickly) "Yeah, just thinking about the game. Nothing to worry about, Ma."His Mother nods, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze before the conversation shifts back to lighter topics. Jace's mind drifts back to the game, but also to the things he can't control - like the memory of his recent break-up.
[EVERRIDGE BASKETBALL COURT - DAY]
The next day, Jace is back on the court, running drills with his team. His focus is sharp, but his thoughts occasionally wander. Aiden notices and pulls him aside.
AIDEN
(concerned) "Hey, man, ayos ka lang? You've been a little off lately."JACE
(sighing) "Yeah, just... you know, stuff on my mind."AIDEN
"It's about her, isn't it? The break-up's still messing with you?"Jace looks away, his jaw tightening slightly. He takes a deep breath and looks back at Aiden, trying to shrug it off.
JACE
"I thought I was over it, pero... it's hard, you know? We were together for years, man."AIDEN
(nodding) "Yeah, I get it. Pero huy, you'll bounce back. You always do."Jace forces a smile, appreciating Aiden's support but still feeling the sting of his broken relationship. They rejoin the team, but Jace's mind isn't fully on the game.
Off the court, life didn't play by the same rules. There were no clear paths, no easy wins. And for Jace, the pain of his break-up was a reminder that not everything in life could be controlled or predicted.
Jace playing, his movements precise but his expression distant. He makes a perfect shot, but there's no joy in his face.
After practice the team is cooling down, chatting and joking around. Jace is sitting on a bench, staring at his phone. He scrolls through old messages, his heart heavy.
The court was his sanctuary, but even there, he couldn't fully escape the memories of what he had lost. The texts, the photos, the plans they'd made - all reminders of a future that would never be.
Jace expression hardens, and he puts his phone away, determined to move on. He stands up, shaking off the lingering sadness, and joins his teammates in their banter.
JACE
(grinning) "Tara na, guys. Let's hit the showers before Coach makes us run another lap!"The team laughs, and the mood lightens. Jace heads to the showers, trying to leave his troubles behind, if only for a little while.
[JACE'S BEDROOM - NIGHT]
Jace lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. The room is dark, and the only sound is the soft hum of the fan. He turns over, trying to find comfort in sleep, but his thoughts are too loud.
But off the court, when the lights were out and the world was quiet, Jace couldn't outrun his thoughts. The weight of his responsibilities, the expectations, and the heartache all collided in the darkness, leaving him restless and searching for peace.
Jace finally closes his eyes, his expression one of exhaustion, both physical and emotional.
