[MIA'S HOUSE - DAY]
Mia sat by her bedroom window, the soft light of late afternoon filtering through the curtains, casting gentle patterns on her bedspread. Her eyes, though open, seemed unfocused, as if her mind had wandered to a place she couldn't quite reach.
The past few days had felt like an endless loop of waiting and uncertainty, a feeling she hadn't anticipated when her relationship with Jace had first begun.
Their last conversation echoed in her mind-a brief, strained exchange in the café. Jace had been distant, his eyes clouded with a storm Mia couldn't decipher. He had muttered something about needing space. Since then, silence had stretched between them like a vast chasm, Mia had no idea how to bridge.
At home, Mia found herself drifting through her daily routines on autopilot. Her mother, Janneza, had noticed her withdrawn demeanor but chose not to press. They were close, but Mia couldn't find the words to explain the gnawing worry that gripped her heart. She wished she could reach out to Jace, shake him from whatever was keeping him away, but the more she tried to contact him, the more he seemed to retreat.
In class, Mia often finds herself zoning out. The words of her teachers blended into a dull hum, the material failing to penetrate the fog of her thoughts. She'd stare at her notebook, the blank pages mocking her inability to focus. The social studies assignment due the next day seemed insignificant compared to the emotional turbulence she was navigating.
[Neon Haven Mall - DAY]
One particularly quiet afternoon, Mia found herself wandering through the corridors of Neon Haven. The mall was bustling with activity, a stark contrast to the turmoil inside her. She wandered past her favorite stores, the vibrant displays and cheerful music failing to lift her spirits. Everything seemed to be a blur, a reminder of the normalcy she was missing.
She paused in front of a jewelry store, its window filled with sparkling rings and delicate necklaces. She remembered the time when Jace had surprised her with a necklace on her birthday. It was a simple silver chain with a tiny daisy pendant, a symbol of his affection that now felt like a relic from a distant past. Mia's fingers brushed against the glass as she stared at the reflection of her own solemn face. She wondered if Jace would ever explain why he had suddenly withdrawn.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her from her reverie. She fished it out, hoping for a message from Jace, but it was just a notification from one of her social media apps. She sighed and pocketed the phone again, feeling the familiar pang of disappointment.
Days turned into a blur of restless nights and aimless days. Mia's friends noticed her growing detachment but didn't know how to help. Jazzie Dufemio and Ysa Soleramo, her closest friends in her previous school, tried to cheer her up with outings and distractions, but Mia's heart wasn't in them. She appreciated the effort but felt like she was dragging herself through the motions, hoping that somehow, Jace would emerge from his silence.
[EVERRIDGE LIBRARY - DAY]
On a particularly gloomy afternoon, Mia sat in the school library, flipping through a textbook without actually reading it. She was lost in her thoughts when the sound of footsteps approaching drew her attention. She looked up to see Jenna walking towards her, her face etched with concern.
JENNA
"Hii, Baby girl! You've been awfully quiet lately. Is everything okay?"Jenna takes a seat beside her. Mia forced a smile, though it didn't reach her eyes.
MIA
"Just a lot on my mind, I guess."Jenna studied her for a moment, then nodded.
JENNA
"I get it. Pero you know, you don't have to go through this alone. If you need someone to talk to, andito ako."Mia's throat tightened, but she managed to nod.
MIA
"Thanks, Baby girl. I really appreciate it."As Jenna chatted about their upcoming history project, Mia found herself listening more intently. The familiarity of her best friend's voice, the normalcy of their conversation, was a small comfort. Still, as the day wore on, the weight of her own worries never fully lifted.
[MIA'S HOUSE - NIGHT]
Back at home, Mia lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Her room was filled with the soft hum of her desk lamp, the only source of light in the otherwise dark room. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was in a waiting room, not for a doctor's appointment, but for something much more intangible-a resolution, an explanation, or perhaps just a sign that Jace was alright.
The clock ticked away the minutes, and Mia felt the creeping uncertainty tighten its grip.
MIA
(to herself) "What if Jace never reached out? What if this silence was a sign of something irreversible?"She turned onto her side, trying to push the thoughts away, but they persisted like shadows in her mind.
In the midst of her sleepless night, Mia heard the faint sound of her phone vibrating on the nightstand. Her heart leaped as she reached for it, hoping against hope that it was Jace. Instead, it was a text from Anna, checking in to see how she was doing. Mia appreciated the gesture but couldn't muster the energy to respond.
As she set her phone down, Mia's thoughts returned to Jace. She remembered their shared laughter, the way his eyes would light up when he talked about his passions, the gentle way he had held her hand. It was these memories that kept her hope alive, even when the silence seemed overwhelming.
Mia closed her eyes and tried to picture Jace, hoping he was somewhere, working through whatever was keeping him from her. She pictured him smiling, as he had in those happier moments. And as the night wore on, Mia finally drifted into a restless sleep, her dreams filled with fragments of what once was and the uncertain future that lay ahead.
