To the outside world, the Diaz twins could not have seemed more different from each other to say the least. Miguel was the outgoing twin, always ready to strike up a conversation with just about anyone. You would think that due to his talkative and friendly nature, he would have lots of friends, but that was far from the truth. Unlike his sister Michelle, Miguel had a rather hard time making friends and was often the victim of harsh bullying from the kids at school. Their mom has had to move them around a few times in order to give him a fresh start. Michelle on the other hand was always a magnet for the pretty, popular, and rich girls of the schools she went to. She never really understood why as she was nothing like those other girls. She always put on a facade. In fact, most of the time she was quiet and always kind of shy around people she didn't know. Deep down she knew she wasn't like the popular girls that befriended her.

In the confines of the Diaz household, the twins were best friends. They spent every waking second together whether it was watching movies, doing homework, and even chores. They've never spent a day without each other. The love they had for one another was immeasurable. The twins slept in the same bed until they were ten and when their mom got an apartment with rooms for each of them, they were oftentimes found sleeping in the others room in huge bean bag chairs they bought for that exact reason. Regardless of their opposing popularity statuses at school, Michelle really looked up to Miguel. She admired the way he was so open about who he was and the things that he liked. He was also known to never back down from a challenge. The way Michelle saw the world was that if Miguel could do it, so could she.

Currently, the twins were collecting their families mail outside when a middle aged white man walked out of a neighboring apartment carrying what looked like a trash bag and an old tool box. Miguel rushed up to the man to introduce himself while Michelle hung back with a look of disbelief etched on her face as she reluctantly followed him.

"Hi, my names Miguel. My family and I just moved into 109."

"Great, more immigrants," the man replied dismissively.

Michelle took the hint that the man did not want to be bothered by random kids in the middle of his day so she grabbed Miguels arm and tugged him back towards the house. Miguel shook her off and attempted to continue the conversation while the man threw his items in the dumpster.

"Actually we're from Riverside," he said, clearly not picking up on the man's mood.

"Listen Menudo, I've lived in this shit hole for over 10 years. The pipes don't work, the fountains full of piss. The only good thing about living here is that I don't have to talk to anybody. So, nice knowing you," he replied as he briskly walked away.
