Yao Momo's house was huge. I made it just before the rest of the group went in. Sero, Ojiro, Denki, Mina, and Jiro were all there already. The house had a huge gate that swung open. Yao Momo brought them into a huge room with a table that could probably hold their entire class. She rolled out a tea set with tiny cakes.
"This place is crazy," Mina whispered, looking up at the giant chandelier that hung over them.
"People actually live here?"
"I know."
Yao Momo poured them all tea. "How is everything? I hope you like it."
Mina snorted to herself. "How could we not?"
They studied for hours. Yao Momo was the only one in there who actually knew what she was talking about. Ojiro could sometimes explain things too. It helped to study, but it was difficult to compete with five other people for answers.
I left a little early, using the longer walk home as an excuse. The sun was in the lower half of the sky as I did. It would be time for dinner soon. I had told my parents I might be late. They wouldn't be counting on me to be home in time.
I walked through a restaurant section of town. Couples and families sat inside and out with a variety of meals. They spread from ramen shops to hamburgers and fries to little diners.
"Hey, Y/N!"
I looked up to see Bakugo and Kirishima walking toward me. Bakugo was glaring, as always. Kirishima waved.
"What are you doing here?" I waved back.
"We're going to study. You should join us. That's alright with you Bakugo, right?"
Bakugo grunted. It wasn't a proper answer. Kirishima took it as a yes.
I looked for an excuse. I had an excuse. A couple of them actually. But it was studying for the final exam. That was good for me. Why not?
"Sure," I said.
We ordered and opened up our books. Bakugo's notes were surprisingly neat. He didn't highlight or anything, but everything was legible. He shouted at Kirishima more often than he did at me. Maybe that was his love language. I thought of all the yelling he had done at strangers and passersby. Maybe not.
"No, there's no point in scaring off the cat if you're trying to save it," Bakugo rolled up one of his notebooks as if he were going to make Kirishima with it, something he had already done many times. "Try again."
I looked at Kirhsima to see if he had caught the irony. He was too focused on trying to find the answer. It went over his head.
"Look here. Call the police then investigate. If you get killed or kidnapped too, then it was all a waste."
"This is a waste," Kirishima muttered.
Bakugo glared at him. "What did you say?"
"I've got to go," I announced. I had stopped learning anything an hour ago. It was late. I wanted to sleep. The exam was tomorrow already.
Kirishima glanced at his notes again. "Me too." He sighed. "My mom will want me home soon."
Bakugo unrolled his notebook. "See you extras." And he was gone in a minute. At least he had left the money for his meal. Kirishima counted over it as I packed up.
"There's a bit too much here," Kirishima said. "He pocketed a few paper bills. I return them to him tomorrow."
They both paid then started walking home. As they reached their neighborhood, Kirishima started peering into the darkness and examining lawns. He was acting funny. I got a cold feeling. Maybe he saw a villain. Maybe someone was following us. I thought about it. What would I do if someone attacked both of us? I'd run. I'd leave Kirishima behind. He was nice and all, but there was too much at risk. I wasn't going to stay.
"What's going on?" I asked instead.
"Oh, there's a little fox around here that sometimes shows up."
Oh, so much worse. Somehow he had found the only topic that was worse than if I would let him die as I ran away. What a magician. "That's nice."
Kirishima, bless him, didn't seem to notice how awkward that comment was. He continued on. "Yeah, it's tiny too. I've seen some foxes and they're much bigger than this one. It must just be a kid fox."
"I'm sure it's normal size," I said grouchily.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Actually, I first saw it a bit before we met. Pretty cool, I guess."
No, no, nononononono. Not cool. Not cool at all!
He smiled at me. "Maybe it's your spirit animal or something. It's protecting you from evil. Your quirk has to do with foxes right?"
"Yeah, my spirit guardian or something."
No!
"Hey, Y/N, this is you."
I looked up. I had almost walked completely past my house. I chuckled, embarrassed. "Yeah, it is."
Kirishima readjusted his bag. "Good luck tomorrow."
"You too."
And I was safe a moment later. The boy with too many questions and answers uncomfortably close to the truth was gone and I was opening my front door.
My parents were reading in the living room. My dad looked up when I walked through the room. "Studying go well?"
"Yeah, it did. Yao Momo helped a lot."
"It's going to rain tonight," my mom said. She didn't look at him, but her meaning was clear. Sleep inside tonight.
My phone was almost dead. I checked it as I plugged it in. Mina was texting good luck to everyone. Tomorrow was going to be difficult.
I lay back on my bed. Every day was difficult. Sometimes just in a slightly different way.
