Inside was loud.
Mina and some of the other girls had hung streamers from the loft and balloons floated around on the floor.
"L/n! There you are. You took forever. Where were you? It's not cool to always show up late to everything." Mina ran up to me, holding a red, plastic cup.
"Sorry. I didn't think it would take so long to get here." Mina glanced at Kirishima and an evil glint appeared in her eye.
"I know why you took so long..." She wagged a finger in my face. "Wait 'til after the party, L/n, and you can't keep him all to yourself." Kirishima and I exchanged a confused look.
"Um," I began. "What do you mean?" She sighed dramatically.
"There's no use playing dumb, L/n. I know what happens at teenage parties."
"What?" I was genuinely confused.
"Fine. Play dumb if you want, but no spoiling the party for the rest of us." She walked off toward the drinks.
"Um, what?" I glanced at Kirishima, who shrugged.
"I have no idea."
We split up after that. I joined Tsuyu, Uraraka, and Midoriya over by the wall. They were talking about a new hero they had seen on the news. I tuned them out pretty quickly, watching everyone else in the gym.
It looked like everyone had come, including Bakugo who stood grumbling in the corner with Kirishima. I frowned. Why did Kirishima hang out with him? Bakugo was a jerk to Kirishima, well, a jerk to everyone, really. I wondered if there was some kind of payment involved or if Kirishima just felt sorry for him. Either way, I couldn't see how Kirishima could put up with him.
"L/n?" I zoned back in to Urarake calling my name.
"Uh, yeah?"
"How long have you been staring at Kirishima?" All three of them are smiling at me. But they're doing that thing where they try to hide and they think they're doing a good job of hiding their smiles and it ends up looking creepy and evil.
"I dunno. I zoned out and was thinking."
"About him?" Tsuyu asks.
"Sorta. It was more about how he puts up with Bakugo."
"I don't know where he finds the patience," Tsuyu said.
"Yeah, right?" Uraraka said. "I would think Bakugo would be a difficult person to deal with, but Kirishima seems just fine with it."
"You grew up with him, right Midoriya?" I asked. He nodded, taking a sip from his drink. "Was he always this difficult growing up?"
"Um, I guess so. He just deals with his determination differently, I would say. He wants to be the number one hero too so everything he does is him trying to get to that point sooner."
"But you're going to beat him there, right Deku." Uraraka punched the air with her fist. Midoriya shuffled his feet and ducked his head with embarrassment. I looked over and saw Bakugo glaring at us. I wondered if he had superhuman hearing. I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if he did. The kid was amazing.
"So," I turned back to Uraraka speaking to me again. "You and Kirishima."
"What about us?"
"I think we should set you up."
"Uh, why?" This conversation was getting weird.
"Well, you two are cute together. You came to the party together-"
"We just met outside the building. Coincidence."
"I don't care," Uraraka placed a hand on her hip. "We're going to set you up, aren't we, Tsuyu?"
"Ribbit."
"Please don't. You think this is silly too, right Midoriya?" He put his hands up and took a step back.
"I'm staying out of this."
"Thanks for the help," I said sarcastically. "Anyway, please just leave it alone. Don't try to set me up." Uraraka squinted her eyes and pouted a little.
"Fiiine. Then you gotta catch the fish yourself?"
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing." I roll my eyes.
"I'm going to find Mina."
Mina was talking with Hagakure, Denki, and Sero next to the food tables.
"Oh hey, L/n," Mina greeted me as I walked up. "Where've you been? Denki was telling us about this cute little fox he's been seeing around."
Fox? Could that be me?
"Yeah," Denki said. "I started seeing it a bit before you came to UA, L/n. Bakugo and Kirishima have seen it too."
"Huh, that's cool." I took a cookie from the table and nibbled on it. I didn't really want to talk about that fox that is, of course, me. Denki, however, had other plans.
"Kirishima said he thinks that it's following him."
"Oh?" Sero said. "Why's that?"
"Well, when I've seen it, it's almost always sitting under this one tree on my way home, but he's seen it in lots of places. I think he said a park, later when he was taking a walk, and even in his tree."
Oh no, not this. Talk about something else. Anything else, please!
"His tree?" Mina laughed. "He saw a fox in a tree?"
"I dunno, that's what he said. The tree was right outside his window so he brought it in his room. When he got back from school it was gone."
"That doesn't sound like something that Kirishima would say." Mina crossed her arms. "I'm gonna ask him." Denki shrugged.
"Sure, go ahead." Mina retrieved Kirishima, so we could all hear his answer.
"Alright, Kirishima," Mina challenged. "Denki says that you saw a fox in a tree."
"Yeah. It was weird. I was doing my morning workout, you gotta stay in shape, you know, and looked out my window and there it was. The fox was lying in the tree, fast asleep. I thought it might fall so I brought it inside my room. When I got back from school, it was gone and my mom was complaining about orange fur in the living room."
Denki smiled at Mina. "Told you so."
"That's pretty bizarre," Mina ignored Denki. "But why would you bring it into your room? At least put it outside or something."
"I dunno." Kirishima shrugged. "I guess I didn't think of it. Plus, it seemed like it had been following me over the past weeks so I thought: might as well."
"What do you think, L/n?"
