"Y/n! Come downstairs and help me make dinner." A few seconds after I jumped into my room, my mom called me. I quickly changed and went downstairs.
"Can you chop the carrots and wash the lettuce? They'll be here in a few minutes. I'll go get the chicken from off the grill..." she was more talking to herself than me at that point. I washed my hands and grabbed a knife.
About ten minutes later, the doorbell rang and my mom almost cut herself with the knife she was using. She got jumpy when we had guests over.
"Oh, your father isn't home yet. Y/n can you get the door?" I finished drying the lettuce and rolled my sleeves back into place. I opened the door to find a couple about my parents' age. The husband was holding a plate of cookies and his wife had her hand on the shoulder of a boy. My eyes widened slightly when I saw who the boy was.
Kirishima?
I stepped back and held the door open for them, giving the best polite smile I could.
"Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Kirishima. Please, come in and make yourselves at home," my mom said from the kitchen. She hustled over to us and smiled kindly at the family.
"Thank you, Mrs. L/n. Here, these are for dessert." Mrs. Kirishima took the plate from her husband and handed them to my mom.
"Thank you so much. I was wondering what to do for dessert when you called me. Y/n, will you take these to the kitchen? I'm so sorry, but my husband was held up at work. He should be home soon." The plate was thrust into my hands and I quickly walked back into the kitchen to put it down.
"Y/n, will you show this nice young man your room?" I sighed quietly and walked back to where everyone was. I smiled politely at the boy and motioned for him to follow me as I turned to walk upstairs. I closed the door behind him and let my smile fall a bit.
"So, what should I call you?" I asked awkwardly. He was looking around the room when he answered me. If he was trying to avoid eye contact, he was good.
"You can just call me Eijiro."
"So, you moved here recently?" I walked over to my desk and turned the chair around so it was facing the room.
"Yeah. Just before the school year started." He moved to sit on my bed as he spoke.
"What was it like? Where you lived before."
"Well, it was a lot like this, but closer to the ocean. We used to go almost every weekend. We moved so I could be closer to my school."
"You go to U.A. right?" He shifted a little as if it was an uncomfortable topic for him.
"Uh, yeah. How'd you know?"
"The sports festival." He relaxed at that and we talked until we were called down for dinner.
Our parents were instant friends. Eijiro's parents didn't know that many people because they were new, so they were grateful for the invite. Our dads connected over similar tastes in heroes. I grimaced a bit at the topic of conversation when we entered the room, which was my father's former job.
"A pro hero? Do you know what your rank you were?"
"It was somewhere in the hundreds, mostly because my quirk was quite helpful. However, I was more popular than I should have been because my quirk was rare and quite dangerous."
"What made you retire?"
"The public demanded it. They said my quirk was too dangerous for me to continue using "recklessly"." Mr. Kirishima nodded then noticed that we had entered. "Eijiro, Y/n! Getting along, I hope." We nodded and sat down to eat.
As we ate, the parents talked like they had been best friends for years, while Eijiro and I only said a few words to each other. We answered questions from the parents, but we mostly just ate and listened.
This social stuff is not for me. I wonder when we're eating dessert.
The parents talked for, what seemed like, hours. I was forced to sit and listen long after everyone was done eating. Finally, the long-awaited words came.
"Alright," my mom stood up and slid a hand under her plate. "Who wants dessert?"
I jumped up and grabbed my plate, Eijiro following suit. He followed me into the kitchen and we placed our plates on the counter next to the sink. I cleared my dad's and Mr. Kirishima's plates then helped my mom dish out the cookies and ice cream. While we ate, my parents' conversation turned to the U.A. sports festival.
"Yes, I saw your son's fights. He has an impressive quirk, very useful, even if it isn't flashy. I'm sure he's a big help with yard work," my dad said in between bites. Mrs. Kirishima nodded.
"Oh yes, he's a huge help. We were so proud of him, he fought so well in the festival." I swore I saw a tear in her eye.
"It's a shame for Tetsutetsu, the only reason he lost was that he didn't eat enough iron beforehand. I want to fight him again." Eijiro said. I struggled to remember his fights for a second.
Oh yeah. That iron guy. He basically had the same quirk as Kirishima. That was a fun matchup.
"So Eijiro, what do you think of U.A?"
"I can't believe I actually got in, but it's awesome. The classes where we get to do actual hero stuff are the best, and we have All Might as one of our teachers."
"Are the people nice?" My mom asked.
"Yeah, most of them at least. There's this one guy in my class, he's loud and can be mean but he's cool. Everyone gets kinda competitive sometimes, but I think it's usually because of stress, and that's what comes with training to be heroes. You can't settle for last."
My dad nodded, obviously impressed by his small speech.
"You're right, nothing wrong with a little competition. Iron sharpens iron, they say."
This conversation feels like it's leading somewhere. I don't know if I like this...
"So, Y/n," Mrs. Kirishima said as I took a bite. "Are you excited about your transfers to U.A?" The ice cream turned sour in my mouth.
What?
