Why I came back downstairs, my mom was sitting at the table with two steaming cups of tea. She glanced up as I entered the kitchen and motioned to a chair. I sat and waited as my mom took a long, slow sip from her mug.
"How did you get in?"
"I got bored early this morning and saw a light on in the other house. I went to go look, as a fox, it was Kirhsima's room. I fell asleep in the tree outside his room. When I woke up, I was in his room, he was gone, and the window was closed and the wood was rotten or something so I couldn't get it open. I was able to get out without anyone seeing me, but it was close."
My mom sighed into her tea. I noticed she look kind of like she was trying to hide a smile.
"Mom?"
"Hmm."
"Why are you smiling?"
"No reason."
The next day at school I had some missed work to do and I had to get notes from my classmates. Mina and Hagakure claimed to have not been able to focus at all the day before because they were so worried, but being unable to focus was not a rarity for them.
Multiple times during classes I caught myself thinking or looking at Kirishima. It wasn't for any specific reason, it just sort of...happened.
I also found myself wondering what my mom was so happy about when I had told her what happened the day before. I would have thought she'd be mad and upset with me. This morning she had winked at me as I walked out the door. Moms are weird.
A few days passed. Nothing really happened. I fell into a routine. With school work and sometimes having out with the other girls, I was decently busy. My parents seemed happy and I suppose I was happy too. At the very least, content. However, it was difficult to teach myself to think differently and try to hate the world at least a little bit less.
One day, Present Mic assigned us partners for a project. I was assigned to Kirishima. At the end of class, he approached me.
"Hey, L/n, wait up."
I had left the classroom and was walking toward lunchrush when Kirishima came up.
"Yeah?"
"How do you want to do the project?"
"Do you mean like when should we work on it or more like how we should present it?" He shrugged. "Well, I guess we should go to the school's library after classes are done and then maybe to one of our homes if we haven't finished. We weren't given any in-class work time or anything."
"Okay, but we don't have to do everything today, we were given a week."
"Yeah. So library after school?"
When class ended and I had backed my bag, I went to the school library to meet with Kirishima who was somehow already there. He looked up and waved as I entered the big room full of books and shelves. I sat down across from him and took out my notes from class.
"So, how do you want to want to do this?"
"I think we should..."
We worked together for the whole week, one of us going to the other's house on more than one occasion. He seemed excited to work together, then again, he seemed excited about just about everything. Often he would come up right behind me after class to talk about some new idea he had come up with during class. He was like a little kid or puppy, so excited about everything. I also got more weird looks from my mom every time he came over. I tried to ask her about them once and she started giggling like a teenage girl.
The project went pretty well and we got a good grade for it. Mina kept asking if we did anything, I don't know why. I just told her we worked on our project. For some reason, she didn't seem to believe me.
One day after class, Mina came up to me and started talking about a party she was planning on throwing for the class.
"I was thinking about doing it this Friday. Hopefully, the whole class will be there. We could ask Mr. Aizawa if we could do it in one of the gyms. We could have music on the speakers and food. What do you think?"
"I dunno. Sounds fun."
"You've never been to a party have you?" I shook my head. "Seriously? We are definitely changing that. I can't have any of my friends not going to parties."
"Well, I didn't really have any parties to go to." Mina held up a finger.
"No more excuses. You're coming to this party. It will be so much fun!"
She continued to plan out loud. I got permission to go to the party and, on Friday night, I showed up at the gym. It took a minute for me to work up the nerve to walk inside. Just when I was about to enter, someone called my name.
"L/n. Hey, L/n."
I turned around to see Kirishima jogging up the path. He was wearing normal clothes, perhaps a bit fancy, but his hair was the same spiky forest as always.
"Uh, hi." Why was I so awkward? He caught up to me.
"Ever been to a party before?"
"Uh, no, I haven't."
"I haven't been to too many either. Believe it or not, I used to be terrified of them." That was hard to believe. Kirishima was always so energetic and fearless. He would make a good hero. I couldn't see him standing outside a gym too scared to go in.
"You don't seem to believe me," he said.
"Well, it's a little hard to believe."
"Why? Because I'm so manly?"
"Uh...sure." He laughed.
"Well, should we head in?" I asked. He seemed confused for the briefest of moments, then it passed.
"Sure."
