CHAPTER 16
[ New Orleans, 2012 ]

"You didn't answer the question." Georgia and Elijah were laid in bed, the events of the day had began melting away after a much needed shower. As Georgia's mind had cleared, she had remembered Klaus and Elijah's conversation at the docks.

"What question?" Elijah rubbed her arm soothingly.

"When klaus asked what you would do if... what happened to Cami happened to me. You didn't answer. You deflected." She looked up at him, watching as his eyes flickered nervously as he searched for his answer. He shifted, sitting up straighter and pulling Georgia up with him as he moved his hand from her arm and began to rake his fingers through her hair.

"I did not answer..." Elijah gritted his teeth as he looked down at her. His eyes were swamped in sadness as he took in every inch of her, as if this was the last time he'd ever be able to look into her eyes. "I failed to answer because, I have no idea what I would do in that situation."

Georgia frowned as she sat up, pulling herself gently from his arms. "Elijah we've talked about this. I thought we were both clear. I don't want to be a vampire."

"Yes. On principle, of course I would give you a choice. You will always have a choice, but my love, I am grateful that we have not been faced with that dilemma because I cannot be entirely sure how I would react if I were about to lose you." He traced soft patterns on her exposed thigh, avoiding eye contact at all costs. He knew he was wrong, but he also knew that he could never lose her.

Georgias face twisted in disappointment. "Even if it meant disrespecting what I want? You said it yourself Elijah, if you force me, you lose me."

"I would lose you either way." He stared at her, watching as her features softened. "We discussed whether you would be willing to become a vampire, we failed to considered life or death situations."

"The context doesn't matter Elijah, it's not what I want." She sighed, shaking her head as she toyed with the bedspread.

"I will not lose you."

"Elijah we don't have forever... you know that right?" He looked away as her eyes began to well with tears. "You are going to lose me, eventually. I mean, we have maybe... twenty years before people start giving us weird looks because I'm old enough to be your mom. Even if we stick that out, I'm going to get old and I'm going to die-"

"Stop." His voice cracked as he shook his head.

Georgia reached out, cupping his cheeks as she pulled herself into his lap and laughed gently despite her tears. "You think I like this? -I'm going to be a wrinkly, bedridden grandma one day, and I'm going to have to watch as the nurses flirt with you because they think you're my grandson"

The corners of his mouth upturned into a smile.

"But I know you'll be there, in my final moments and I'll always be there when you need me - even in another hundred years because I'll be here." She rested her hand upon his heart.

"I find comfort in the fact that I know you'll never forget me. I mean how could you?" She laughed softly, looking down at him. Elijah smiled at her, despite his heart slowly breaking as he considered their future. He always imagined that she'd give in, but Georgia seemed to have it all figured out.

She bit her lip apprehensively. "I just have to know that I can trust you in respecting my decision. Because if I have 24 hours left on this earth I don't want to spend it fighting with you."

Elijah nodded. "You have my word."

Georgia smiled softly as she lay her head on his chest. Elijah straightened against the headboard as he wrapped his arms around her. "I hope Hayley's okay..."
