CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
ghost town
VALENTINA'S HANDS MOVED moved mechanically as she stirred the batter, the comforting rhythm of baking filling the silence in the apartment. She knew Kol was watching her, waiting for her to address the elephant in the room. The smell of vanilla and sugar couldn't mask the tension hanging in the air. She hadn't said anything about Klaus and the fact that he had left, off to create more hybrids, and the unresolved issue of Kol, Finn and Elijah still being daggered.
Kol finally broke the silence, his voice teasing but firm. "You know, darling, as much as I love watching you bake, you can't bake your way out of this problem."
Valentina sighed, pausing her stirring and placing the bowl on the counter. She didn't turn to face him, but her shoulders sagged slightly under the weight of everything she was avoiding. "How are we supposed to make this work, Kol?" she asked quietly, her voice tinged with exhaustion. "How can I even think about the future when Klaus is making hybrids, and the fact that you still are daggered?"
Klaus had tried calling her and she had ignored him. He even sent flowers to her apartment, which she gave to her neighbor.
Kol stepped closer, leaning against the counter beside her. His gaze softened as he spoke, "Well, darling, Finn and I had a little chat while you were at work. And believe it or not, we've come to terms with it."
Valentina finally looked at him, confusion flickering in her eyes. "Come to terms with what, exactly?"
Kol sighed. "I know that you are worried about how the five of us will work out, being mates and all, and I just want you to know that you have nothing to worry about with the two of us. Elijah and Klaus may be a different story at first but we will figure it out."
Valentina's smile softened as she gazed at Kol, realizing just how perceptive he was. He had noticed her worries without her ever having to say a word. It wasn't just about the fact that his brothers were still daggered—that weighed heavily on her heart—but there was another layer, a deeper concern she hadn't yet voiced. How could they all be okay with sharing her? Four brothers, four soulmates, all bound to one woman. The idea felt overwhelming.
"You're worrying again," he teased softly when noticing the look on her face.
Feeling overwhelmed by the depth of their understanding and love. "I know this is complicated," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "But I never want any of you to feel like you're not enough, or that you have to fight for me."
Kol grinned, "Oh, sweetheart, I know I'm enough. Don't you worry about that." But then, in a rare moment of vulnerability, he added, "But I'll admit... I've never shared before with my brothers. It's new."
