I tried not to regret my decision to scream Jason's name in the middle of a school hallway filled with students.

"JASON! JASON SMITH!"

Jason finally stopped in front of his locker. His jaw clenched in anger. Was he jealous of Will? God, that was ridiculous.

"Jason, we are just friends."

"Yeah," he said weakly.

"No, no!" I snapped quickly. "Will and I are just friends."

Jason looked back at me. "Then what are we?"

I flinched. We weren't kids anymore. Honestly, this friendship was getting harder. Or maybe it was just me. We were possessive of each other, but I didn't know what I felt for him.

"You are... my best friend."

Jason sighed loudly and opened his locker. My heart sank as he fell silent for a moment.

"You mean something to me. You're important," I said. "I don't know." My voice was a whisper.

Jason was still silent, then he locked his locker again after putting some thick books from his backpack.

"It's okay," Jason finally said. "It's not my right to stop you from being close to anyone, right?"

"Yes."

"Let's go home," he said while carrying his skateboard.

"Oh, shit!"

"What's wrong?"

I checked the zipper of my bag. "I think I dropped the keychain from Mom... Yep! I dropped it."

"What keychain?"

I rolled my eyes. "When I went to Florida yesterday she bought me a keychain that said Miami and now I lost it. She must be furious."

"Oh, yeah. Lady Jane must be furious," Jason said. "Where did you lose it?"

"Eh? How would I know! If I knew the name, it wouldn't have been lost!"

He grimaced. "Let's look for it," Jason turned towards his locker again, "the keychain couldn't have fallen when you were standing with me here. It must have fallen when you moved."

"That makes sense."

He walked towards where I was. "Since you were chasing me, you must have run a bit, right?"

"I did because you were running too."

"Hmm, yeah, yeah."

He kept walking and I followed him. We reached the front of the cafeteria.

"When you were chasing me, it was pretty crowded," he turned back to the way we came, "so if it fell around here, it would have gotten kicked." He bent down, crouched down and looked under the lockers. He reached out and my Miami keychain was in his hand.

"Wow! Cool!" I shouted.

Jason handed it to me. Then he realized there was something sticky on his hand.

"Yuck! What is this!"

"Ugh... gum!" I helped him wipe it off with a tissue.

Jason's demeanor changed in a matter of minutes. Now we were laughing together. He was walking beside me again and telling me funny stories. It bothered me because I hadn't told him about my move to Florida in a few days. So I decided to gently tease him.

"I'm having a birthday party in two days. Are you coming?"

His eyebrows raised. "Of course I'm coming."
