Jason's face brightened. There was a glimmer of hope. That must be what he was thinking.
"That's great, Will! Great idea!" Jason exclaimed excitedly.
Will shook his head. "I think I'm smarter than you. Nadya should have chosen me instead of dating you."
Jason stepped closer to Will. "Actually... Nadya and I aren't really dating yet."
"Huh? But you said..."
"Yeah, I lied. I do like Nadya, but we're not dating yet. Supposedly... we have one more day together and I'll use that day to convince her to stay in Chicago. So she'll be my girlfriend."
I was flabbergasted. That could happen. I could change my mind and stay in Chicago to be with Jason. It was all because of that murderer! I thought Mom was the one who ruined my life. But it turns out that the murderer was the one who ruined my life!
I kicked Will's desk so hard in my anger. Strange. I didn't get electrocuted. The papers on it flew in the other direction, away from me.
Something new. I had powers. Obviously I would get electrocuted if I touched a person or an object, but if I could hold it in, and with my emotions exploding, I wouldn't get electrocuted.
Of course my energy was drained now, but maybe this miracle was what humans called... supernatural.
"What was that?" Jason shouted. "The papers just flew away on their own."
Will's hair stood on end as I approached. "I don't know," he whispered hesitantly, "but I got goosebumps."
Jason clenched his jaw. He scanned his vision. "There's no fan. The windows are closed, too."
There was a feeling like a wish that Jason could see me or at least feel my presence. So that he would know that I still hadn't returned. I wasn't at peace. But I didn't want to risk doing that in front of Will.
"Come on. You better get out of here!"
Will pushed Jason to the door. Before Will could close the door, I slipped out too. Jason grabbed his skateboard and left with me riding behind him again.
Jason came home and I was tired of guessing what he was going to do. He opened his journal that contained theories about who my killers were and wrote something new on a different page.
SUSPECT.
"So the killer is someone who knew that Nadya liked Retty-Tetty, but didn't put the poison in at the party." Jason wrote while mumbling. His lips pursed and his brow furrowed again.
"Oh, Jason, don't be so hard on yourself...."
Jason cupped his face. "But who?"
Phil. His name was crossed out by Jason. "He didn't arrive until the party was halfway through," Jason said. "Plus, the perpetrator put the poison in randomly so Phil's motive for deliberately throwing a party on Nadya's last day seems odd."
"Yeah, but that's possible, right? He did hate me," I grumbled. Obviously I didn't accept Phil being removed from the list of suspects who killed me. In fact, he was the strongest defendant.
The next name crossed out was Will. "Neither is she."
Now it was just Aunt May. Jason bit his lower lip and let the room be silent for a few moments.
"Aunt May knows Nadya likes those candies," he said quietly. "She's always home, too."
Jason was frustrated. So was I. No wonder the police arrested Aunt May. She was the closest to these allegations. Oh, and one more thing, Aunt May was the one who bought Retty-Tetty at Gary's Supermarket.
Jason was desperate and closed his journal. He walked to the bathroom to clean himself up. In the midst of this mess, I was glad Jason still used his common sense to take care of himself. Jason returned to the room with a new set of clothes. I'll use my new powers and give Jason a code tomorrow.
Jason crawled into bed. "See you tomorrow, Nadya," he said to the ceiling as he covered himself up to his neck with the blanket.
I smiled. He was still taking care of himself, but I thought he was going crazy. His habit of talking to himself was getting worse. "Night," I replied, but of course Jason didn't hear.
The sunlight pushed through Jason's bedroom window. His phone rang desperately. Jason rubbed his face and slowly got up and reached for it.
"Hello?" His voice was still half-conscious.
I didn't know who was calling or what he said on the other end, but it definitely shocked Jason to death.
"Okay, Uncle... I'll be there now."
Uncle? Maybe Dad, but what was wrong? What could have made Jason choose to grab his jacket and skateboard instead of his school uniform. He skipped school!
We cut through the cold six o'clock morning towards... somewhere. Jason rode his skateboard fast through the shortcuts. We passed tall buildings on a street I recognized, I knew where we were going.
The hospital. But why would Dad call Jason to the hospital and what reason could he have for skipping school?
Jason skipped school! That wasn't him at all, but now he did it. For what?
Dad came out of his room still fully dressed in his doctor's coat. His face was tired. He looked older than he really was. There were dark shadows under his eyelids and the wrinkles on his forehead were hard to disappear.
"What happened?" Jason asked.
"Aunt May, she's having a heart attack."
My eyes widened. "What?"
"I have to go to the ER now," Dad said.
Of course I snuck in too. And there Aunt May lay. On the surface of her old skin, there were several tubes connected to her body.
Dad gave a signal and then jerked Aunt May's chest with a device. I waited. For a few minutes he did it over and over again. The beeping sound - the electronic device next to Aunt May's bed was very disturbing, but I knew a little about the device. As long as the lines on her monitor kept moving dynamically, she was still alive.
I looked up. A light from the ceiling shone on Aunt May's body. Oh, no... no... That light. A familiar light. Diffusion... bright white light with dust dancing slowly.
The transparent Aunt May, slowly moved up, following the light without anything holding her back. She looked down, saw me, but just stayed still and her gaze was blank.
She was gone. Gone with the light. Just disappeared like a patient who failed to be saved by the doctor I had seen before. Beeps and static lines were drawn on the monitor.
