TWENTY-SIX

A WEEK in the hospital, time dragged slowly, especially because I was a ghost. Even though Lisa Cane had been arrested, I was still here.

Jason came every day to visit Lady Jane. Maybe as a form of gratitude and to atone for his guilt. It could have been Jason who was shot, but Mom protected him and almost lost her baby, but that wasn't Jason's fault either.

Katrine accompanied Jason to visit Mom. They brought a bouquet of white roses. Mom had suspected something was going on between Jason and Kate, but they quickly denied it.

Should I be angry? But why? I'm a ghost now. Having feelings for Jason and being possessive of him is useless. Now I prefer to let him go. Or he who lets me go. The point is, I just want him to be happy, with whoever it is, including Katrine.

Dad only dared to actually enter the treatment room once or twice. The rest of the time he was in the waiting room, hesitant to go in, then finally chose to go home. At home he had no appetite, but Gracy came with a piece of raw beef in her hand. Dad cooked and they ate together.

"I met Nadya," Mom said.

Phil frowned. "Where?"

"When I was in a coma. I don't know where. I think it was in a park."

"What did she say?"

"She wanted me to look after El," Mom said. "When is the trial?"

"Tomorrow. Lisa Cane is being sentenced to twenty-seven years in prison."

"Twenty-seven years in prison?" She shrieked. "She should be sentenced to death! She killed someone with poison and it was premeditated!"

"She also killed Mrs. Adeleine Smith."

"Is that true?" Mom asked.

Jason came into the room, apparently having heard their conversation earlier.

"Yes, Uncle? Is that true?"

"I don't know. But someone told me. I believe her."

"Who?" Jason was really impatient.

"Mary."

Mom held back her laughter. "That crazy Mary? Honey, you shouldn't believe her."

"No... when she burst into the house that time, she didn't look too crazy. Her eyes were firm and I think she was telling the truth."

"That's impossible," Mom said.

"Uncle, this is very important to me. I have to solve the mystery of my mother's death if Lisa really killed her."

"You're right, Jason, but we need proof. Where is that crazy Mary?" Phil asked.

"She's in a mental hospital. Kate and I went there yesterday to see her, but she's getting out of control. She's screaming all the time."

Oh, poor Mary... How did she get to that point? Jason was right. He had to solve the mystery of Mrs. Adeleine's death so that Lisa could be punished more severely. Maybe that would calm Mary down.

"Well, honey, if that's true, you have to help Jason solve this problem. It's also for Nadya. I want Lisa to be punished as severely as possible," Mom said.

"Yes. I've told the lawyers that too, but we'll see."
