CHAPTER FOUR.
I MISSED YOU
Kate Carter was back. Kit kept having to repeat that to herself. Kate Carter was back and she was storm-chasing again. Not only was she Storm-Chasing again, but she was doing so with what Kit considered to be the enemy.Seeing her brought back all kinds of old feelings. Ones that Kit had been trying to ignore. It didn't help when Kate and Javi nearly crashed and it definitely didn't help when she saw Kate panicking in the truck.
All of this meant one thing. Kit's mood was off for the rest of the day. The next chase they did, Boone had tried to film her and she quietly shook her head. It was unusual for her to do so, which meant it was no surprise that when they pulled into the motel for the night she felt her arm grabbed and was pulled back towards the vehicle the moment she tried to bolt to avoid the conversation.
"Boone, seriously?" She gave him an annoyed look and he looked at her. She expected his usual cheery grin but instead, he was looking at her the way a disappointed dad would look at his child that he was scolding. "What?" she hesitantly said.
"s'going on?" His arms crossed over his chest. Now Kit could simply lie, say it's nothing. However, it became apparent she wouldn't be able to do that when the rest of the Wranglers climbed out of the vehicle and walked toward them.
"Hey, what's going on with you today? You seemed real upset." Dani was the next to ask her. She paused.
Kit didn't like it when they all noticed something was up. It made her feel like she was some burden they all had to take care of. She'd felt that way for the first few months of knowing them and since then she'd tried hard to not let it show when she was upset.
That was failing right now, probably because she wasn't even trying. To be fair it had been 5 years since she had last seen her best- well former best friend. So hiding her emotions wasn't the biggest thing on her mind.
"Y'all I appreciate the worry, it's real sweet. I'm fine. I just saw someone I wasn't expecting." Her voice was soft, she tried to sound appreciative even if she just wanted to go and crawl into the crappy motel bed.
"Javi?" Lily looked confused. "Didn't you see him the other day?" Kit shook her head.
"Nah, the girl with him. I- well I used to know her." Dexter seemed to have a brief sense of familiarity pass over his eyes. Kit didn't notice.
Then Tyler - who had gone to grab their room keys - chose to come in at the exact moment this conversation ended. "I'm just going to head to bed."She was met immediately with protests and she knew why. It was a sort of tradition to hang out after a chase. Didn't matter how rough, they sat around almost like a campfire and talked. Just once Kit was hoping she could get out of it.
