FIVE YEARS AGO

"Hey, Katie. It's uh- it's Kit." The voicemail was hard to hear. The connection was weak. "I mean you probably already know because of the caller I.D. but- I'm sorry this is stupid."

Kate's head was on her pillow, the phone was next to her ear as she listened to Kit's voice.

"Look I know that you don't really want to talk right now. Especially to me, but..." She heard Kit's breath shake and could tell she was sniffling. Her heart thumped and Kate looked down feeling guilt creep in.

"I really need my best friend. I know that things are shit right now and I get it. I really get it. I don't blame you for leaving it's just-" Kit's voice cracked. Kate could practically see her face, she could imagine her tear-streaked cheeks and red eyes. She struggled to keep her own tears at bay.

"It's just- you're the only one who understands what it's like to be going through this and- and I miss you." She stumbled over her words. "Please just call me when you get this okay? Please." Her voice took on a begging tone and it grew softer, before the voicemail ended, leaving her the option to play it again or call back.

Kate didn't call her back. She didn't reply to her texts either. Though the pleading of her best friend echoed in her head, she never responded. Kit didn't need her in her life messing it up. She didn't need to find herself in constant danger because of Kate's stupid ideas. She was going to be a star, Kate would only hold her back and get her killed.

In the end, instead of responding to her plea, she picked up her phone and hesitated before she blocked Kit's number. She wasn't going to be responsible for another death. Even if it meant cutting out her best friend in the world.

Kate unblocked Kit one year later and tried to call her. She didn't get a response.

For Kit, the day she realized that Kate wasn't going to respond was the day her real spiral began. When the dial tone hit her she was met with the "Number Unavailable." She realized that Kate didn't want anything to do with her anymore.

She tried to throw herself into something else, but everywhere she went she found reminders of what she had lost. Not only her friends but any dreams she had. She'd tried to sing, she'd tried to write music while her hand was healing. She couldn't do it.

Then, months later just when she felt like maybe things could get a little bitter, Javi left. It was at that moment that Kit realized something. She hadn't lost 4 people in that tornado. No, she had lost 6.

When Kate tried to call her one year later she was sitting on a bench outside a gas station preparing to leave Oklahoma. Kit watched the number flash across the scene and blinked.  She hit ignore.
