Cruel love

Chapter 30 Barbara

Life is unpredictable. It can be all rainbow and roses one day and storm and famine on others. My life was also turned upside down just like that. I was happy I had finally confessed my love to Enzo. Our life was going well. Even Lily and Liam were happy too.

Then Dante came home and told me that the Russians got Enzo.
Enzo might be dead already or was about to die as time passes by.
I felt so helpless. I couldn't stop crying since I got the news. "Dante you have to go for him, you have to save him".

Dante's eyes flashed guilt "I can't do anything Barbara".
"You have to Dante, he would have done it for you without even a second thought". My voice is turning hoarse as I speak while sobbing.
Dante's face fell down in guilt and defeat. I myself was unable to take it anymore, I fell on my knees crying with hiccups.

Linda came and she held me while she was crying too. She told me it will be okay. She could lie all she wanted because I know it will never be okay not now not ever. Enzo isn't replaceable in my life. No one could take his space. I realised it when I was in Poland, that I was so mad at him, I hated him, but I was unable to replace him. I was unable to forget him no matter how hard I tried.

That's it I won't let him die like that. If his men don't want to do anything about it, then I will. I will do something, anything.
"Dante we have to do something. We could offer him a deal in business instead of Enzo's life or anything else, maybe money or I don't know. But please don't let him die like this". I was crying so hard that my eyes burned and my throat hurt.

Dante looked at me. His eyes are full of hurt. He took his phone out of his pocket and walked towards Enzo's office. I stood up and followed him. I told Linda to keep an eye on Lily and Liam, they were sleeping in their room.

When we entered the office. Dante dialed a number. I motioned him to put the phone on speaker. He told me to keep quiet and not to panic if he said something bad. I agreed after 4-5 rings he picked up his phone.

"Hello Arkadi, I would like to offer you a deal in exchange for Enzo's life".
"I am listening".
"You could have all the drug labs back and we wouldn't interfere or try to take them back".
"I would have that and I will have Barbara in exchange for Enzo, after all he is the capo his life is worth much more than some drug business" he laughed "don't you agree Dante".
"That won't happen, Arkadi".
"Then we don't have a deal".
He was about to cut the call but I said "wait I will come to you but you have to return Enzo alive", Dante stared at me in anger and mouthed "what the fuck are you doing?"
Arkadi laughed on the other side "I will send you the location and time of exchange tomorrow and don't try to act smart, remember I have your capo I could kill him anytime I want" he said and cut the call.

Dante screamed at me "what the fuck*k was that Barbara?"
"What I only helped with getting Enzo back" I said calmly.
"We can't give you to him, these Russians are crazy you don't know them they won't be nice to you, they don't have honor or limits, they would rape you, torture you, beat you and probably won't even let you die so they could do it over and over again".
"I know the risks Dante, but I can't let Enzo die like this".
"Enzo would never agree with this, to hell with Enzo I will not let it happen".
"Dante please don't make it more tough, you know Enzo's life is more important than mine, he needs to lead the mafia, besides he had risked his life to protect me now it's my turn, let me do it".
"Oh Barbara, it is against our honor, we protect our women and children at all cost, we will die for them gladly and so will Enzo".
"Dante let me do it. Life without Enzo is already dead for me, at least let me save him so I could die happy" I took Dante's hand in mine "promise me you will protect Lily and Liam after me".
He put his other hand above my hands "I take an oath on my honor I will protect them and you tomorrow, we will sneak some backup at the site,we might be able to protect you and Enzo".

A ray of hope gleam from Dante's plan, but chances of success were little.

I spent the rest of the day with Lily and Liam. It might be my last with them. The thought made me so emotional but I held back my tears. I only want to have happy memories with them and want to give them last happy moments.
They have lost a lot,first their mother then father and now me. But I know Enzo will protect them and love them.
I took the same promise from Linda that I took from Dante. She cried so hard and agreed. I know she and Enzo will love them and keep them safe.
