We were sitting in the kitchen discussing what the plans were for this summer when Aelia came rushing in.
"We need to do something about that death trap of a horse!" She shoved off her boots and pushed them to the side before walking into the kitchen and plopping down at the counter. "It's insane. Nothings working."
"We will keep trying," Katlynn says setting the newest and last batch of cookies on the counter to let them cool.
There was a thumping sound and two boys came running into the room. Billy and Benji.
"Cookies!!!!!!!!!" Billy squealed in excitement as he reached to the plate.
"Two each!" Katlynn told them. "You can have more after dinner."
"Okay!" Billy says.
Benji let out a groan, "Fine!..."
Katlynn turned to me, "so any ideas of what you want to do for summer break before school starts again?"
I shrugged, "not really... I just plan to go with the flow I guess..."
"That always works," Katlynn nods.
My mom grabbed another cookie, "so I hear that you hired a new worker?"
"Yes, Grant is his name. Great background history and amazing with animals. We could always use extra help with the cattle herd growing every year."
"By the way," Katlynn turned to me. "Due to some arrangement issues you'll be sharing your bedroom with Aelia. Her bed was added just this week."
"That's fine," I say. I'd gotten along with Aelia just fine. There shouldn't be a problem.
"Is there another kid?" My mom half joked.
Katlynn laughter, "Kinda actually... a friend from collage that I knew has this new job opportunity and her son needs a place to stay. So I told her he could stay for the summer if need be."
"Have you met the kid?" My mom asks.
"No, but from the news report he's a great rider." Katlynn says.
"News report?" My mom asks.
"His parents are pretty well off, he does a lot of horse competitions." Katlynn says funny sitting back down at her chair at the table. She turned to Aelia, "why don't you help Esme bring her bags up? Th en you both can come back down for one more cookie?"
"Sure," Aelia got up grabbing my suit case without saying anything else as she started towards the stairs.
"So lots of things have changed since... you were last here" Aelia says.
"Like?" I ask.
"Well for starters my dad's cattle business has gone up a lot, and there's a lot more workers here than there used to be." Aelia reached the second floor and opened the door to the attic room. "So if you don't recognize almost everybody that's completely normal."
Walking into the attic room in take in the new look.
Instead of the walls being white like before they were more of a tan. The bed had been taken out and instead two smaller ones sat by the edge and window.
My bookshelf and all of my books were still where I'd left them, but one big new thing was the giant picture wall that Aelia had added to the room beside the closet."I hope you don't mind us touching all of your things. The move around was kinda..." Aelia trailed off.
"Sudden?" I asked.
"Yeah." Aelia says. "So where do you want the bag?"
"I'll just throw it on the bed until I find time to unpack it later." I grabbed the badge from Aelia and walked over to the beds and set it on the one that's bed sheets were completely untouched.
