Rodrick working as a carny surprised you, but also felt natural. He probably needed a job and this one hopefully paid well enough. Did Rodrick even have a full time job? A part time job? What does he do in his free time? You couldn't imagine him going to college, but you also knew you couldn't judge a book by its cover. Especially Rodrick, who proved to you time and time again that you were always wrong about him.
As you approached him, his eyes caught yours and of course, the group you were with. He questioned it for a moment, but otherwise seemed unaffected by your choice of company tonight. You both agreed to keep things between you a secret, but there was a small part of you that wondered what that would look like. Do you completely ignore each other? Make it seem like you couldn't stand each other?
He was wearing a bright yellow vest over his usual clothing. You guess that was one easy way to identify employees.
"Hey Rodrick-" Greg cooly tries to say before Rodrick cuts him off with the raising of his hand.
"Uh-uh. I am not letting you cut the line to ride." He crosses his arms and you almost laugh. Was Rodrick actually following the rules?
"But I'm your brother!" Greg cried out. You look towards Holly and notice she winces at his words. Ouch, he could have gotten on a ride. He was his brother for crying out loud.
"And you aren't the one paying me for this gig. Scram." He squints at Greg as if trying to wish him out of existence. If only it were that simple. You had other ideas of how to be a good wingman for Greg.
"Rodrick, what if I stay down here? You let the kids go on the ride and I'll stay here with you." You offer, hoping this would work. Rodrick had to like you enough to let this slide. Sure, you weren't for kids cutting the line either, but you felt bad for Greg. He just wanted to ride with Holly and this ride was perfect. They could scream and hold hands. Maybe she'd even ride the ferris wheel with him later.
"And why would I want that?" His voice cuts through you. Ouch. So he was really pretending to not like you.
"I'll give you twenty bucks and some advice." You counter, placing one hand on your hip.
"Deal. But I'm not sure what advice I want from a goody two shoes like you." He says incredibly fast. Guess money was a motivator for him.
"Am I really a goody two shoes if I'm bribing you?" You question, but enjoy the conversation. Feels like old times. Of course, old times was maybe two days ago when you first met. And in two days, you already agreed to have sex with him.
Rodrick laughs and pays attention to his console as the ride was finishing. He lets people off and loads new ones up. Greg and Holly go into a cart (and she's holding his arm!) while Chirag and Rowley are in another. As Rodrick locks the last cart, he pushes a button and the ride begins to spin.
"Did you really just let those people cut?" A teenage girl asks, her outfit revealing more than what it should at her age.
"Yup." Rodrick says, still looking at the ride. Completely ignoring her and her friends comments, he turns his attention to you.
"That's against the rules. You can't do that!" She argues with him. This can't go anywhere good.
"I control the ride, I make the rules. Don't like it? Don't care." He flatly says. Damn. Rodrick could be cold in an instant. You assumed it was just because he had to be in charge and keep people safe, but you could also see the flip side of it that he was just rude to people he obviously didn't care for.
"So, you're hanging out with the rug-brats?" Rodrick says, definitely mispronouncing Rugrats on purpose.
"Yes, one happens to be my cousin. And your brother. They asked me to come along and I figured I might as well since I'll be MIA later tonight." The sun was setting quickly, making the lights of the festival seem to shine. It reminded you of the city, with all the lights constantly on.
