You had started to put your clothes back on, mind still reeling from what had just happened. You had just had sex with Rodrick Heffley. You just having sex was the most shocking part. It was in the back of a van, parked on a street, with a boy you barely knew.
Scratch that.
It had only been a few days, but it felt like you had known him forever. Something about your time together felt as if time had slowed and stretched itself to accommodate both of you. You think back to just three months ago, still at school, still working on the research project; blissfully unaware of what was to come. Would the version of you from back then have ever thought something like this would have happened? Sex with a boy you barely know in his van that was parked outside your family's house?
"What are you thinking?" Rodrick's voice murmured against your shoulder. He was already dressed and ready to go, but you had been taking your time; reveling in the matter of what had just happened between you two. You weren't sure how special it was for Rodrick, but for you it meant everything.
"In my own head, I guess?" Your answer is vague and you know it. You don't want to come off as that girl who overthinks her first time after sex. You want to seem cool and nonchalant for Rodrick, but you can't place why. Maybe you don't want to think back to your bet of who falls in love first.
Is that even what this is? Could it be love or at least like? Was it just a way to let off steam? To experience the touch of another human being to try and hold and fix the broken pieces of yourself?
"You... You don't regret what we did right? Cause I don't. Not for a second." His hands help button up your flannel as he sits behind you, his legs encasing yours on either side. His hands pull your hair away from your neck, planting kisses there.
"No, I'm not thinking about that. I mean, I am, but I guess I'm thinking of what comes next? I don't know if you know this, but Rowley does not like you. Whatsoever. And he knows I was with you or at least he'll figure out that I was. I have no idea why he wanted me home so badly, but I can't imagine it was because of that reason. To try and get me away from you." You can't imagine it's good either. Rowley cannot find out about this. He would never forgive you. His best friend's brother? Yeah, it's a bad trope and look for you. Especially after he said to stay away. And that you promised you would.
"You think he would get Greg to call me to bring you home just because he doesn't like me?" He says, his chest vibrating with laughter.
"No, he told me to stay away from you. Said you're a bad influence." I lace up my shoes with a final tug, ready to leave the van. I wish I didn't have to. I could just stay in the small space with Rodrick, not having to face the real world.
"I am a bad influence. You've broken into a school, fought a guy in a bodega, went to the city at night without telling anyone, and had sex in a van with the town's local bad boy." His hand squeezes your breast and you let out a yelp, pushing his hand away.
"There's no way you just called yourself the local bad boy." You half turn, trying to face him to see if he was serious or not.
"There's no way a girl like you would give a guy like me the light of day, yet here we are." His hands fall to your waist, holding you there. He is enjoying this too much, being behind you. It almost seemed like he didn't want you to leave yet either.
"It's night time Rodrick, if anything, I only give you the darkness of night." Rolling your eyes, you try once more to get up. Rodrick just pulls you back down, your back into his chest.
"Well then it makes it even more romantic." He kisses the tip of your nose and gives a squeeze around your mid section. You push off of him and rest your hand on the door handle, shaking your head at his joke.
"I'm gonna walk the rest of the way, do not turn your car on for 10 minutes and then drive away in the opposite direction of my house. Whatever I'm about to walk into won't be helped if Rowley sees your van driving by." You go to push the door open, only to feel a hand wrap around yours.
"Can I call you tonight? Afterwards?" Rodrick's eyes look at you with hope and longing. Maybe he really does enjoy you? The way his eyes fill with hope makes you question what this is. What it could be.
"One, it's now morning so you'd be waiting a long time for that call. Two, if you only hang out with me at night I'm going to begin to suspect you're a vampire." His hand was cold in yours. As if without your touch, he was beginning to freeze again. Even you had begun to feel the heat of the van dropping now that you were no longer breathing hard from Rodrick's touch.
"I do like biting your neck, but no. I just think we're less likely to get caught." You pull your hand away when he says that.
Ouch. While you know he's probably talking about Rowley, it still hurts to think he wouldn't want to be seen with you in the daytime. You think back to all the days you looked at guys and they caught you watching. You ducking your head, cheeks lighting up red, too embarrassed to look back.
Not having much luck in the relationship department made you want to overthink his words, but you knew you couldn't let it spiral. If you wanted to seem mature, you needed to be tough. You needed to not read into things.
"Goodnight Rodrick."
