His fingers made my chin up, forcing me to meet his brown eyes.
"May, I?"
His question lingered in the air, soft yet weighted with concern for me. My heart raced as I hesitated, unsure of how to respond to him so I avoided his eyes, looking down at the messed up sheets of our bed, avoiding the feeling of heat crawling up my neck. I couldn't believe myself that I had let those words out of my mouth. He gently tilted my chin up again, forcing me to meet his brown eyes now shiny with something dark.
"Meera," he whispered, almost comforting. "You don't have to be embarrassed."
I swallowed the thick lump of saliva down my throat looking down again, struggling between wanting to hide from him and wanting him to understand how I'm feeling for him right now. The guilt and concern carved into his features only made the moment more intense.
He wasn't judging me. He never has judged me. He is just waiting for me. More patiently this time. Like he always is with me.
"I-It's not you," I stammered, feeling the weight of my own hesitation. "It's just-" I met his eyes, unable to form any words now, "I-It's just the pregnancy. I think my body's changing faster than I realized."
A beam of understanding passed through his eyes. Slowly, his hand brushed from my chin to rest gently on my shoulder, his thumb now brushing against my collarbone.
"Does it hurt?" He asked, softly.
I shouldn't have worn this t-shirt today. His touch is doing something to me. Something that my heart and body have never experienced before.
I nodded, staring absently at his now dark brown eyes, the knot in my throat making it hard to speak. "A little." I mumbled, "It's just the swelling. It's normal, I guess. But, it's just a bit uncomfortable for me."
He didn't say anything at first, but I saw the tension in his posture slowly melt. He wasn't panicking anymore, just staring at me. The air between us shifted to something calmer, softer now, filled with something unspoken but undeniably there. His other hand moved slowly, coming near the edge of my t-shirt, and his eyes met my gaze, silently asking for permission.
I nodded again, this time more assured. His touch is doing something to me which I never thought it could.
Slowly, carefully, he helped lift the t-shirt over my head. The cool air coming from the air conditioner hit my skin, and I let out a sigh of relief. The relief I've been wanting to feel from the past few minutes. His eyes stayed on me, not with lust, but with something deeper. Something deeper that he wants to confess something to me, yet he's pulling himself back from letting me know it. He came closer to my face, and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.
"We'll figure this out together," he breathed, his lips brushing against my skin, sending a shiver down my spine. "You're not alone in this, okay?"
I know, I'm not alone. Now, I have you with me.
And, I'm aware, I'm safer by your side.
Even in this intense situation, all I can feel is calmness surrounding me. His presence is shielding me with all the new changes I'm experiencing right now.
