A WEEK LATER

I had a long day at the hospital with rounds and patient consultations. My mind was buzzing with medical terms and patient histories when I entered one of the quieter rooms to check on a patient who had been recovering from surgery.

I approached the bed and smiled at the young man lying there. He was a bit frail but seemed to be in good spirits. As I gently checked his vitals and reviewed his charts, he reached out and took my hand.

"Dr. Wanarat," he said softly. "You are so kind. You have made this whole experience much easier for me."

I smiled and squeezed his hand gently. "Thank you for saying that. It's my job to make sure you are comfortable and well taken care of. I'm glad to hear everything is fine."

His smile widened. "You have a special way with people, Dr. All of your patients must be comfortable around you."

Listening to his kind words, I couldn't help but let my mind wander back to a memory from a year ago. It was a time before Yin Anan Wong became my boyfriend and he was just another patient on my list.

Back then, Yin was far from the easygoing partner I knew now. In fact, he was like a walking, talking ball of frustration. He hated my guts and made it very clear. If I had a dollar for every time he rolled his eyes or snapped at me, I would probably be able to retire by now.

I chuckled to myself, remembering how I used to feel annoyed by his appointments. And let's just say, our conversations often felt like a verbal sparring match. I was convinced he had a PhD in Grumpiness.

But now, looking back, it's hilarious to think about how he went from being my most challenging patient to my loving boyfriend. If someone had told me then that I would end up head over heels for him, I would have laughed and said they were crazy.

It's funny how life can turn around. From the guy who used to make me question my career choices to the one who's now the love of my life.

I shook my head with a smile and refocused on the young man in front of me. Life is indeed full of surprises.

"I appreciate that. It means a lot to hear it from you," I said to the young man.

After finishing my check-up and making sure he was settled comfortably, I left the room.

During lunch hour, I met Third at a nearby sushi restaurant. We settled into our seats and began to sample the assorted sushi on the table.

"You know, War," he said, picking up a piece of sushi, "I don't really have any best friends other than you and P'Yin."

I chuckled. "Yeah, you always say that. I didn't realize I was officially your best friend."

Third grinned. "Well, you and P'Yin are pretty much the only ones who stick around. Everyone else seems to come and go."

I chuckled softly. "I guess that makes us pretty lucky then."

He sighed dramatically, diving into a roll. "But you know what's really driving me nuts? P'Mai, she's been relentless, trying to convince me to renew my contract with SkyWings."

I raised my eyebrows. "Oh, really? What's she doing now?"

Third rolled his eyes, mimicking P'Mai's voice. "'You should really think about renewing your contract, kid. It's a great opportunity. SkyWings has connections.' And then she throws in some guilt trip about how I will be 'throwing away my future.'"
