The Death

There was blood all over the road but I couldn't see a body that the blood belonged to.

"Pull over!" I screamed at Jase.

He immediately obeyed and pulled the car over to the side of the road.

"What is this?"

"Isn't obvious!? It's blood!" I said.

The sight was sickening and I don't know how much of the sight I could handle.

"We need to call the police!" I said.

I began to dig around in my purse, searching for my phone.

"Where is it?" I asked to myself with tears streaming down my face.

I finally found it and dialed the number you should when there is trouble. I told them everything they needed to know and hoped they would be there soon. At the moment Jase is hugging me close, kissing my forehead or the too of my head, comforting me any way he can think of. He finally stops and I look up at him.

"What?" I asked him.

"Stay right here. Don't move." He said.

He began to move slowly towards whatever he saw. When he finally got to his destination I could tell what he saw was in the ditch. His eyes grew big and he quickly ran back to me.

"What? What is it?" I asked as panic began to be a dominate feeling.

"Nothing. Nothing. Let's just go back in the car." He began to pull me back to the car but I didn't want to go in there. I wanted to know what he saw.

I pulled his hand off of me and began to slowly walk to the ditch. I finally got there and looked down. More tears began to pour down my face and I began to sob. I turned slowly around and saw Jase behind me. He wrapped his arms around me and I cried into his chest.

After about twenty minutes of my endless sobbing and Jase comforting me the police finally showed up. Hey came over to me and Jase. They tried to pull me away from him, but I wouldn't let them.

"Can you tell us what you saw?" The sheriff was standing in front of Jase and I.

"It. It. It was terrible." I said and began shaking my head.

"Can you tell us where you saw it?" He asked another question.

I pointed over to the dreaded ditch and he followed my finger.

"I'll be right back." He said.

He walked away from us and Jase pulled me closer to him and I buried my face into his chest. I allowed another crying fit. The sheriff came back after ten minutes.

"Do you know who that is?" He asked me.

"Y- yes."

"Who?"

"It can't be though. It can't be."

"I think that's enough questions for now." Jase said and began to turn away.

"Wait! She needs to go to the hospital."

"For what?"

"Just to make sure she's ok. See if she needs any help."

"She's fine!" Jase yelled at him.

"Stop. It's fine." I said and walked over to the sheriff.

I sat in the ambulance while they asked me questions. I was soon released and Jase drove me home.

"You want to talk about it?" He asked me.

"No."

"Do you need anything?"

"Will you stay with me tonight? It might seem sudden, but I need someone to comfort me."

"Yeah. I will."

I lead him up to my room and we both settled down on my bed. Jase was hugging me close to him and I had my face in his chest. I felt safe like this. I finally drifted off to sleep while Jase was playing with my hair and saying random things. Probably to make me forget. I guess it worked.

I woke up often through out the night because of the nightmares and Jase woke up with me. He stayed awake until I fell asleep which would often take a while since I would begin to cry.

Around seven in the morning my house phone began to ring. I woke up and got out of bed.

"Are you ok?" Jase asked.

"Yeah. Just getting the phone."

I went down the stairs and into the kitchen. I answered the phone and heard our school's principles' voice on the phone.

"Students and parents, I'm sorry to announce that school won't be held today due to a tragic loss. School will be closed all week. We will not reveal whose death it is, but they will always be remembered. Thank you and goodbye."

I had tears going down my face and I was crying against the wall.

"Malia?"

I looked up and saw Jase.

"What's wrong?" He asked.

He walked over to me and hugged me and rubbed circles on my back with his hand.

"School is cancelled due to. Due. Due to."

"I know. I know. It's ok. Shhh." He began to pat my back and rub more circles on it.

"I just can't believe it."

"Come on. Let's go lay back down." He said.

I let him guide me back upstairs to my room and we both laid down on top of my bed.

"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked me.

"Do you? You've been comforting me all the time. It's my turn to comfort you."

"I'm fine. Sure I'm devastated but you knew them more than me."

"I don't think I can." I said, shaking my head and tears falling off of my face.

"Ok. I'll go get you some water." He said and got up off the bed.

He came back a little bit later with a glass of water. I had been scrolling through Instagram when he came back. All the pictures are about it. All the comments are about it. Everything is about it. I can't escape it.

"Give me that." Jase said and took my phone out of my hand. He put it down on my night stand.

"You don't need to see any of that. It's not good for you."

"You want to go back to sleep?" He asked me.

"There's nothing else I can do."

And with that we both laid back down on my bed. Jase was hugging me and calming me down until I drifted off to sleep again. No nightmares this time. Just dreams. Dreams about the person the world loss last night. They were sweet dreams. He was still alive and everything was perfect.

I'm going to miss one of my closest friends. The one who annoyed me but I still liked to be around. The one I once called "phone boy". The one I had a crush on. The one I'll never see alive again. The one that had his blood all over the road. The one I found in the ditch.

Eric.
