ONIKA TANYA
DECEMBER 24TH
NYC"Good morning Onika!" Matthew waved at me from his desk and Ms. D waved just as I stepped off of the elevator. I made my rounds, saying hello and good morning to everyone in my path.
Matthew followed behind me from his desk to mine, sitting on top of it. "Good morning again thickness."
"Hello Matthew."
"You look well rested."
"I finally got to sleep more than four hours last night."
"You better leave that Benadryl alone before you hurt yourself."
"You know me too well."
"Serious. I want you to be alive to see me quit."
"Boy you are going absolutely nowhere."
He shrugged his shoulders because he knew I was right. Every time Matthew got a little attitude or our boss began to piss him off, he claimed he was quitting. Then he would get a raise or a bonus and he would be fine.
"When you get situated, big boss lady wants to see you," He said, and when I looked at him, I could see him smirking.
"Something funny?"
"Funny? Nope," He shook his head.
"Then quit smirking."
"That's just my face. It does this thing-"
"Shut up Matthew."
Her office door opened and I knew that she'd either heard or saw us out here conversing instead of working. I didn't look her way though, just kept talking to Matthew.
"Please tell me you're going to the Christmas party tonight."
"Oooh girl you are pushing it."
"You have to go. If you don't go then I'm not going."
Matthew looked behind himself at Beyoncé while I continued to ignore her. I snapped my fingers in his face to get his attention again.
"Are you going? Yes or no?"
"I've gotta talk to the husband."
I sucked my teeth. "No you don't. Patrick does not care about you going to some Christmas party for work, he said so when we went to dinner."
He wasn't going to get out of this. He had literally begged me to go weeks ago, and now when the time came, he wanted to back out. That wasn't the way things went.
"Good morning Ms. Maraj," Her voice came low, irritated that I had been ignoring her, but she would really have to get over it. Boss or not, we were having a conversation, and she just couldn't butt in and think people were just going to start paying attention to her.
"Say good morning to your boss," Matthew laughed.
I rolled my eyes but looked around him and waved anyway. She nodded before returning back into her office, shutting the door again.
