On the prowl for a Job

I wake up the next day with intense back pain. I sit up and stretch, my back immediately feels better. I pop my neck and sigh in relief.

I get out of the comfortable bed unwillingly. My first is priority is finding a bathroom. I quickly find one down the hall then go back to the room.

I search through my bags from last night. I put on a pair of shorts and a colorful tank top that Connor had pointed out.

I grab my brush and run it through my unruly hair. I look down at my legs, shit. They are covered in hair. I forgot to get a razor last night. New number one priority.

At home I wouldn't mind going out in public looking like chewbacca, but here I'm surrounded by cute boys and one of them will have to give me a ride to the super market.

I take off the shorts and thank myself for grabbing a pair of denim skinny jeans. I leave the room and go downstairs, Ricky is in the kitchen getting something out of the cupboard.

"Hey Ricky." I call out to him, sitting at the bar.

"Hey girl, want some?" He asks, shaking a box of Cap'n Crunch in front of me.

"Sure." I answer. He grabs another bowl and pours me some.

"Thanks for the clothes last night." I say when he places the cereal in front of me.

"No problem, figured you would need them." He says, smiling at me.

I smile and take a bite of cereal. "Wow, this is delicious, what's your secret?" I tease, keeping the conversation light.

"Love, the love I put into that cereal, it changes the taste making it better." He says, shoveling another bite of cereal into his mouth.

"Wow, I want some love." I regret the words the second I say it. My cheeks turn bright red and I choke on the cereal I'm eating.

He raises his eyebrows in surprise. "Umm okay?"

"Sorry, that came out wrong." I try to diffuse the awkward tension in the air.

"It's fine, I knew what you meant." He says, winking at me.

I weakly attempt a smile and we finish our food in an awkward silence. I always screw up in these moments. I mean, I wouldn't totally oppose a little love from Ricky but I just made everything awkward between us.

Ricky heads upstairs, awkwardly waving at me as he leaves. Well, that's a bad start to the day. I sit by myself for a bit before heading upstairs to grab my phone.

I hadn't checked it since I got here. I have a few texts from friends in Oregon. I don't bother texting them, we weren't close just knew each other from the gym. It was time to move on and start a new chapter of my life.

I sit on Kian's bed and scroll through my Instagram. I gained about four new followers, which is cool. I put my phone to sleep and sit back, leaning against the wall.

I'm officially bored. I guess I should go see if my brother is up and what he plans to do today. I get up and go to JC's room. I knock on the door and he calls, "Come in!"

"Hey JC." I say, cautiously easing the door open.

JC is sitting shirtless on the edge of his bed, he has his phone pressed to his ear with one hand. The other hand is telling me to wait a minute while he finishes his conversation. "Babe, I understand. I'm going to busy today, maybe tomorrow." He says into the Apple Product and then listens to the person on the other end.

"Alright babe, I have to go. Love you." He says, a smile on his face as he ends the call. "What's up Jess?"

"Um, well I need to go to the store today for some stuff. I was wondering how far it is." I ask, not wanting to take advantage of him for a ride. Plus the exercise will be good.

"Not far, I can drive you there. I'm giving Sam a ride to pick up his car." He offers.

"That sounds great." I say. I leave the room and grab my purse.

I go back downstairs and sit at the kitchen bar. I scroll through my phone, deleting contacts I don't need anymore. Sam comes down the stairs followed closely by my sibling. "Ready?" JC asks, raising his eyebrows at me.

"Yup." I grab my stuff and head out to JC's car.

"Shotgun!" Sam calls, running up behind me and slamming his hand against the passenger door.

I laugh and climb into the backseat. JC turns on the radio and songs that I don't recognize play as we drive. JC pulls into the parking lot of a supermarket. He slows to a stop and I hop out.

As I enter the store ads for jobs catch my eye. Multiple job openings liter the cork board. There is even one for this store, I check and see who to contact about the job and make a mental note to see if the opening is available.

I go to hygiene aisles and find a razor that I like. I head up to registers and purchase it. I make sure there's nobody in line behind me before I ask the cashier about talking to the manager.

"Did I do something wrong?" The cashier asks. Her green eyes full of worry.

"No, I'm just wondering about the job opening." I say, putting her to ease.

"Oh okay, let me call him." She picks up the corded phone next to the register and dials in a few numbers.

She tells him about my interest and then nods. "He said to meet him in his office. It's through that door and the second door on the right."

I smile, "Thank you...Kimberly." I read her name tag and her smile brightens when I say her name.

I follow her directions and enter a small office. A young man sits behind the desk with his feet up on the desk. "Hello?" I say, unsure if this the wrong room.

"Are you the one who wants the job?" He asks, sitting up straight. His blue eyes probe mine.

"That's me." I answer taking in his appearance. His slender athletic frame is covered with tattoos. His brown hair is unbrushed and messy, but it works well for him.

"Well the job is in inventory so it's mostly stocking shelves and keeping stock of everything. You will get twelve dollars an hour, and work from nine to five everyday." He says, as if the idea of a full time job will scare me away.

"Sounds good, can I have an application?" I say, crossing my arms.

"Nah, you're hired." He says, balling up the application he had grabbed and shooting it into the waste basket.

"Great, when do I start?" I ask, happy to have a job now.

"Tomorrow, see ya then." He says, dismissing me from the office.

I leave the room feeling accomplished, having officially started my new life in Southern California.
