"So, if I remember correctly from our texts, you wanted to give me something?"
"Oh yes! Sorry, I almost forgot." Alex reaches into his jacket pocket and retrieves a rectangular, slim box. He places it on the table and slides it over to me.
I reach out and pick up the box, feeling the smooth texture of the wrapping. As I open it, I find a brand new touchscreen phone nestled inside. The sleek design catches the dim candlelight, highlighting its elegant curves. I take it out and admire its advanced features, especially the camera with multiple lenses that promise stunning photos.
"I- I can't take this." I place the phone back in the box and slide back across the table towards him.
"Please take it," Alex insists, "it has service on it, and you won't have to worry about your phone being unreliable anymore."
He slides the phone back towards me. I pick it up again, taking it from the box.
"Are you sure?" I ask, astonished. I could never afford something like this, and it boggles my mind that he'd gift it so nonchalantly just because I can't afford data for my phone.
"It's the least I can do for now." He smiles warmly at me and I respond with a cheeky grin, looking back down to the brand new device in my hands.
"Thank you so much.. I don't even know how I'd begin to reciprocate this." I say, putting the phone into the pocket of my pants.
Alex laughs quietly, "please, don't worry about it."
The waitress arrives at our table and greets Alex and I, asking us what we would like to drink tonight.
"I'll have a bottle of the Cabernet Sauvignon please," Alex says.
The waitress smiles warmly and nods to Alex before turning her attention to me.
"I'll have a root beer, please."
She pauses for a moment, looking slightly apologetic. "Uh, sorry sir, we don't have that."
I sit there, feeling a wave of embarrassment wash over me as I struggle to think of an alternative.
"He'll have the cremosa and a water, please," Alex interjects smoothly. The waitress nods again and shuffles off with our drink orders.
I have no idea what a cremosa is, but I trust Alex's judgment and hope he ordered something delicious for me. As I sit there, I can't help but wonder what kind of drink it will be—creamy, fizzy, or maybe a bit of both. My curiosity grows, and I find myself looking forward to trying something new.
"Thanks, I didn't realize they didn't have soda here," I laugh awkwardly.
"It's okay. They do, kind of; it's just complicated." He laughs and looks at me, his eyes locking with mine for a moment. There's a brief silence, filled with an unspoken connection, and I can feel my cheeks warming under his gaze.
"Well we should probably pick out some food, shall we?" He picks up his menu as do I mine.
I look frustratingly at the options, confused by all the different names in Italian, and of course with no description of what anything is.
