JASPER'S POV
A cold emptiness surrounds me, heavier than anything I've ever felt, covering my body like a weighted blanket. I'm standing in the same room—the one I once packed my things on my eighteenth birthday. The same room that both brings me horrendous nightmares and the sweetest memories of my mother.
My door, slightly ajar...has a warm light shining through its crevice. With a few, slow, hesitant steps, I reach out, my fingers brushing against the handle. Pulling open the door, I expect to find the familiar hallway of my childhood home.
Instead, the moon full and high above the tall grass shines a dull glow across the ground, lighting every blade with its cool tone. When I step through, my feet touch the cold earth below me, and body feels a deathly chill run through it. My breath catches in my chest, and I squint my eyes to see in the distance.
A figure I can't quite make out stands in the middle, their back faced towards me, as still as a statue.
I remember this place, one that my mother took me to as a child. We had a picnic in the field together, she brought my favorite foods, and together we sat in silence as the wind blew around us, eating. I can't help but remember her face that day, despite her mask of happiness she looked so run-down and defeated.
I try to call out "hello", or anything really—but my voice remains trapped within my body, a newfound panic surging down to my core.
My breath picks up in my chest, and before I can realize it, my feet are carrying me in a fast pace, jogging to whoever sits in the middle of this field. I can feel my heart hammering in my chest, drowning out the sound of my feet crunching the grass below.
My hand reaches out as I try and grab the shoulder of this person, falling short as the ground seems to shift beneath my feet.
I fall.
The darkness now isn't just around me—it's pressing in, thick and suffocating, swallowing everything until there's no up, no down, no sense of where the hell I am. It's as if the world itself has ceased to exist.
Pain rips through my body like shards of glass course through my veins, and I drop down to my knees, a damp liquid below covering my hands as they press against the ground.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
My breathes are harder to come by, burning my lungs with each inhale, followed by sharp and jagged exhales.
Suddenly, a voice echoes, cutting through the pitch-black that engulfs me.
My head turns in every direction, hoping—no praying to hear it again.
"Jasper, please—" Is all that comes through.
That—that voice, I know it from anywhere.
Alex.
Pain tramples every sense within me, unbearable, as I feel my strength slipping. My hand gives out, and I sink to the damp ground, curling in on myself as darkness closes in, consuming everything. My eyes seal shut as I try and continue these shallow breaths, and they barely make it in and out of my body.
Is this what death feels like?
Cold, alone, and deafeningly silent?
Suddenly, I feel warmth on my hand, and my eyes shoot open. I half expect Alex, wanting nothing more for this touch to be his. But it isn't.
