Despite my curiosity peaking I keep myself planted to the stool, setting my fork down on my plate as I listen carefully.
"You said you wanted more time with her, well she's here down in the car." The woman named Veronica's voice sounds belligerent as she speaks to Alex, venom dripping off her words.
I turn on the stool and watch Alex barricade the doorway with his body, blocking off the small gap. My brows furrow and I continue to listen in on their conversation.
"You didn't even plan this Veronica—how did you even get my address?" Alex growls lowly at her.
"Oh honey you should know better, your father gave it to me." Veronicas voice now sounds smooth, her words flowing softly from her lips. Alex raises his arm, and rubs his hand down his face, presumably in frustration.
"Can you at least give me an hour to get ready for her?" Alex pleads with her, and I hear Veronica laugh quietly.
"You can see her now, or you can fight the court for custody when we leave." Once again her tone is filled with malice, and I feel myself getting whiplash listening to her speak. My gut sinks as I listen to them talk, anxiety building itself into a skyscraper that I could imagine myself falling from.
"Ver, please why do you have to do this to me?" Alex pauses, and I watch as his shoulder slump toward, defeat riddled in his body, "all I need is an hour to make sure her room is all clean— and so I can run to the store for her to get the snacks she likes." His voice is low, filled with dismay.
"Why am I doing this to you—are you serious Alex?" Veronica mocks him, then pauses, "don't get me started on the whole pity party bullshit you have going on, I'm not in the mood for it today!" Veronica shouts and I jump in my seat, my body tensing. Every part of me wants to leave but the only door is blocked by a feud that's bound to explode soon.
"Can you calm down please? I wouldn't want to my neighbors to get concerned—"Alex's statement does nothing but piss off Veronica more. I watch as she aggressively shoves her way through the Alex, and walks into the apartment through the doorway. I pause in my chair as she turns to me, her eyes widening at the sight of me.
I study her face, a mix of confusion and the all too familiar twisting of disgust settles onto her expression. Her thin brows pull together and furrow as her hands clench at her sides.
"What the hell is this?" Her tone is short and her emotions seem to draw out for a moment, leaving her expression null. Alex stands behind Veronica and his eyes shoot behind her and back to me repeatedly, his mouth agape as her struggles to find words to say.
"Jasper—I'm sorry you can go ahead and leave while I take care of this." Alex stares at me, his eyes begging me to go, and honestly I'm not sure I want to be here anymore anyways.
I go to scoot of the stool and Veronica takes a few more steps closer to me, her nose scrunching as she takes a deep breath through it. Her head immediately turns to Alex, "Why's there an omega here?" She seethes through her teeth.
"I uh—he's just a friend of mine." I watch as Alex shifts from one foot to the other, tension flowing through his body.
"He smells putrid, why would you of all people ever become friends with one?" Veronica questions him, and turns back to me, walking closer. I sink back into the stool and lean against the edge of the counter as she approaches, her eyes baring into my soul. "You're disgusting you know that?" She spits at me, and my stomach turns in an unpleasant way, my breath caught in my lungs, failing to exhale.
Alex with a few strong strides, makes his way over and defensively wedges himself between the venomous woman and myself, "leave him alone," he barks at her, his tone quickly filling with malice.
