ALEX'S POV
"Mr. Sinclair, can I speak with you for a moment?" A voice murmurs softly, accompanied by the warmth of a hand on my shoulder, stirring me awake from my sleep.
Groggily my eyes flutter open, and I look at Jasper, sleeping what looks to be peacefully, in front of me on the hospital bed. I look around the room briefly, noticing it must be nightfall by how dark the room is. My hand gently squeezes his, and I raise it up to my mouth before placing a soft kiss on its backside, standing up from the chair beside his bed.
The female doctor from earlier, Dr. Heidi, stands in the doorway, and I take that as a hint that she'd like me to step outside with her so we don't disturb Jas's sleep.
Shutting the door behind me softly, I turn to face Dr. Heidi and she greets me with a warm smile.
"How are you holding up?" She asks kindly, and I shrug my shoulders at her.
"The best I can I suppose, given my circumstances are what they are right now," I sigh, dragging a hand down my tired face.
If I were to be honest with anybody, I'm more than tired. I've never felt an exhaustion quite like this before in my life, it doesn't even compare to multiple days of overtime at the office or even hours of fucking physical labor. All I want is some decent sleep, but I can't bring myself to leave Jasper's side, especially not since he woke up yesterday.
On top of basically not leaving his side since he came out of the operating room. The second night here, I was called down to the police station to give my statement to the cops about what happened. I explained everything, saying that somebody had been stalking Jasper for months, and that it had progressed into something only nightmares grant true to.
I told them in detail, about the night I went home, and the envelope of pictures I found by the door. How that fucker hid inside our bathroom, and attacked Jas as soon as he had the opportunity, and how I shot him when I had mine.
I made a call yesterday to Kessler, asking that he help me with gathering evidence to give to the police, to aid my case against Veronica. Because quite frankly, that's who I care the most about getting locked in a damn cage for the rest of her life... Even if I think that treatment is too light for her demented behavior.
She managed to do everything from a distance, all while keeping my daughter from me, proceeding to call me a terrible and lousy dad, what a fucking joke. On the plus side though, she was stupid enough to use the unknown number bullshit she's been doing for months on Jasper's phone, when she called that night for her final charade.
Kessler mentioned over the call we had, that he was able to track the location back to her parent's home because via the program he had installed a few weeks ago on Jasper's phone, due to my request of assistance. For a moment after that call, I felt the most bliss I had in a while—knowing I finally caught the bitch, and killed the man she must've hired to do her dirty work for her.
I shake myself away from thoughts momentarily, realizing I've probably been standing here in silence a bit too long.
"That's s understandable, you seem to be holding up well..." Dr. Heidi starts, offering a sincere smile, "Anyway—I just wanted to stop by and give you an update on your son."
"H-how is he?" I ask quietly, feeling that all too familiar weight on my chest while tears threaten to sting my eyes.
"Hey—hey, he's doing great..." she says softly, putting a hand on my shoulder. The relief that floods through me is like no other at those words, and I find a small smile spreading across my lips.
