Chapter 1 of Book 2
Camryn couldn't believe it had already been a few months after she and Whitney defeated the Enchantress. That meant that it had been only a few months since Ransom died. The empty aching in Camryn's heart threatened to bubble up again but she pushed it down. He's gone and crying over it wasn't going to help him. Besides she had a real problem to deal with. Since she moved in with Whitney and her parents they insisted she attend Ridgeview Academy, the prestigious royal school. Camryn couldn't think of a worse way to spend her time than sitting in a class while teachers talked for hours about boring subjects. She loved learning but hated sitting still. Luckily school wouldn't start for a few weeks so Camryn still had time before she had to endure that. But this wasn't the only problem on her list. Camryn couldn't stop thinking about how the Evil Queen was in Pyrahelm. It wasn't that she was angry that she was locked away but the fact she was still alive. She knew the Evil Queen would find a way out no matter what The United Kingdoms of Royalty did. You didn't stay queen in a place like The Land of Evil without some tricks up your sleeve. Everyone kept saying to relax but Camryn couldn't. The Evil Queen was up to something and no one but her could see it. Well, maybe she and Whitney. Almost like she could read Camryn's mind her best friend barged into her room.
"Camryn are you ready?"
Camryn smiled at her eagerness. "Sure. Where should we start?" They were going to remodel her room.
Whitney slid her hand against the rough wall. "You said you wanted a secret exit. How about we start there?"
"Sounds good to me." Camryn slid to the floor and under her bed. Not a speck of dust was to be found. "Let's put it down here," her muffled voice floated out from under the bed.
Whitney laughed and joined her. She pushed the blankets on top of the bed. "Alright, I'll get the crew in here." The girls wiggled their way out from under the bed and dusted themselves off even though there wasn't anything on them.
Camryn placed her hands on the solid wood of the bed. "Ready?" She asked.
Whitney nodded and together they slid the bed across the floor. The loud screech made both girls cringe.
Whitney rubbed her ears. "That was loud."
You can say that again," Camryn agreed then Whitney laughed.
"Alright," she shouted, "you can come in." Seven short men with long beards came hobbling in. Each one carried a different kind of tool, some saws or hammers. One carried a box of locks and hinges. The dwarfs still lived in their cottage in the woods. Instead of mining, they had taken up craftsmanship. The tallest dwarf who looked like an evil rat glanced up at Whitney.
"Where would you like it miss?""Right here." Whitney outlined a square on the floor near the wall where the bed would normally be.
With that information, the dwarf nodded and spoke something to the other six. Then as the girls watched the seven dwarfs started to saw a hole in Camryn's floor. She had wanted a secret door for so long. The door would open up into a back hallway. From there she could escape the castle. If things were really bad Whitney could come to her room and go with her. But Camryn only expected to use it to get away from Ebony. Yes, she was loving and kind but she was such a worrier. She had lost her son twice so now she expected the girls to just disappear. Camryn couldn't deny it. She had thought of leaving but she couldn't leave without Whitney and knew she wouldn't leave.
