3rd person pov:
The class president, Hirata was speaking at the assembly. He stood before the classes announcing he would be stepping down from his position as president. He gestured to the new president from Classroom 2-A, Miyabi Nagumo. Whispers rippled through the room as students were interested in the new president.
After the announcement Sato ended up bumping into Ayanokoji outside near the gym, where the assembly was held. She asked him "Do you have a girlfriend" her eyes sparkling with hope that he is single.
Ayanokoji shook his head saying, "No."
"Why are you asking me this" he looked at her a bit confused. Sato trails on by saying how she admired Ayanokoji from the Sports Festival and thought he was handsome.
"I have had a girl in my mind for awhile however.." he paused and looked at Sato, it looked like her heart dropped for a moment. "I do not think she is as interested in me as I thought"
Karuizawa was lurking just around the corner though. The exchange caught her attention. Ayanokoji admitting he might have a potential crush gave her a ripple of jealously through her. Sato's face brightened however at the idea that the girl is not as interested
Ayanokoji however felt a flicker of mischief in his mind, maybe he could use this encounter to make y/n a bit jealous. To shake up the board a bit.
As the classroom transitioned back to academics, Mrs. Chabashira announced that there would be something called the Paper shuffle. It would be like a final exam where they would create questions for other classes. Stakes were pretty high and everyone was focused on preparing for it.
Y/n pov:
I was sitting in my desk looking over notes, but suddenly my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen and read a message saying I had bee invited to meet at the cafe with Kushida, Hirata, Horikita, Ayanokoji, Karuizawa, and Sudo. The weight of my conflicting feelings towards Ayanokoji started to heavily press against my chest.
When I arrived at the cafe, my anticipation for the activity quickly turned into disappointment when I did not see Horikita and Ayanokoji. I asked where they were at and one of them said, "Horikita wanted to talk to Ayanokoji about something for a bit." I nodded acknowledging what was being said but I was growing a bit impatient.
Once Ayanokoji and Horikita arrived the atmosphere shifted when they joined the group. We talked about the mini test results and how it can influence our pairings for the paper shuffle.
"I think our answers will definitely affect who we get paired up with," I suggested to the group. Horikita nodded and we agreed on how we would deal with it talking about how we should score.
The next day, we took the mini test. I had a bit of a hard time focusing because I was very curious on who I would get paired up with. I really did not want to be with Kushida or Karuizawa.
I finished up my test and once everyone finished Chabashira announced the pairings.
Y/n, you will be paired up with Ayanokoji." I felt a mix of dread and a bit of excitement wash over me.As time went on for a bit with Chabashira announcing the pairings, at the end Hirata stood forward. He said that he and Horikita would lead study groups, so that we can do the best on the tests with Kushida offering to assist both groups.
I felt a pang of envy at the idea of how close Ayanokoji would be to me, but would it really matter? Part of me just wanted to get him expelled, but I also just hated Kushida and Ryuen too. My dislike towards Ayanokoji felt different towards the way I dislike Kushida and Ryuen. I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't even realize that Horikita was trying to talk to me. She asked if anyone would like to help with her study group and I immediately blurted out "sure."
My phone buzzed again. I hesitated a bit before checking it. Ryuens message appeared at the top of my notifications: "Snake. Who are you?" I felt a bit of a twist in my stomach, is he calling me a Snake? I chose to not respond, but it left me feeling a mixture of dread and curiosity. I told Horikita I might be busy and not be able to do the study group anymore.
"Ayanokoji will have to help instead," she said.
I left and decided to distract myself with the whole Ayanokoji thing. I decided to meet up with Kushida. I made a bet with her consisting of the paper shuffle: If i scored higher in her chosen subject I will drop out of school voluntarily. If you lose Kushida is hereby not allowed to get anyone else expelled.
"Math" Kushida said with a confident tone.
A smile crept up my lips, "That's a deal"It was the next day and I joined Ayanokoji's study group at the cafe. As we settled into the booth, Hasebe stood up to get another cup of coffee, the cup slipped from her fingers dropping to the floor. Ryuen walked in with another girl with white hair and stomped on the cup. He walked up to our table and said to the white haired girl,
"What do you think of these Class D students?" he said as he looked at her.
"Quite forgettable faces," said the girl coldly. Im not sure what Ryuen is trying to do, but it wont affect me.
"Y/n look up when someone is talking to you," Ryuen spoke again but his voice was dripping with condescension
I lifted my gaze with a small sigh, my eyes met the girl's eyes and for a moment I felt like something changed. Her eyes widened, just a fraction, but it was enough to catch my attention. She then quickly looked away to hide it, her expression smoothing over as if nothing had happened.
She had casually remarked that Ayanokoji had a forgettable face along with every else just moments ago, speaking like it was the most obvious observation in the world. But now that she was looking at me, she didn't say anything. I kept my face neutral, offering no response. Her reaction was fleeting, but it lingered in the silence that followed. No one else at the table seemed to notice, but the unspoken acknowledgment between us hung in there
She glared at me and said, "You are playing a dangerous game, aren't you?"
"I do not know what you are talking about." she turned away with Ryuen and just left. I remembered the message Ryuen sent me recently. Maybe she was referring to that?
Ayanokoji asked me to walk with him away from the group for a moment. My heart started racing a bit, "What did he mean by that y/n?" his gaze was searching for mine.
I shook my head trying to force out a convincing smile, "It's..not that important. Don't worry about it." He just paused for a moment and did not say anything. "I don't know what I want any more Kiyotaka."
The air between us thickened, it was filled with unspoken truths. I felt like I was standing on the edge of something monumental, and the unresolved tension left me teetering on the brink.
