I couldn't believe it. We'd spent all that time in the casino, and now our quest would be pointless. There was no way we were going to get everything done in time. There would be a war among the gods, my family would be hurt like in my dreams, and I would die young.

All of these thoughts and emotions went through me. Annabeth tried to tell me it was okay, but I just couldn't believe it. Then of course Annabeth had an idea. My mind went sideways for a second. She loaded us into the back of a Vegas taxi as if we actually had money, and told the driver, "Los Angeles, please."

The cabbie chewed his cigar and sized us up. He was really musty and smelled like a sewer "That's three hundred miles. For that, you gotta pay up front."

I had no idea how we'd pay up front. We were just a bunch of kids with barely enough money to buy a cheap candy bar. Even if we did have money, I had a feeling this guy didn't deserve it.

"You accept casino debit cards?" Annabeth asked.

He shrugged. "Some of 'em. Same as credit cards. I gotta swipe 'em through first." Annabeth handed him her green LotusCash card. He looked at it skeptically.

"Swipe it," Annabeth invited.

He did. His meter machine started rattling. The lights flashed. Finally an infinity symbol came up next to the dollar sign. I looked at Annabeth like she was crazy, but I also started to calm down about our quest.

The cigar fell out of the driver's mouth. He looked back at us, his eyes wide. "Where to in Los Angeles... uh, Your Highness?"

"The Santa Monica Pier." Annabeth sat up a little straighter. I could tell she liked the nickname "Get us there fast, and you can keep the change."

On the way, i fidgeted with my camp necklace. I usually had to mess around with something to keep calm on days like these. Yet the tasks ahead were threatening my sanity. Percy told us about his latest dream. He looked like he could barely remember any of it as he explained it.
