The morning classes went by smoothly, though Jules couldn't help but zone out a bit during the grammar lesson led by the ever-energetic Present Mic.
As he enthusiastically rattled off examples of sentence structures, Jules found herself doodling in her sketchbook. Her hand moved automatically, sketching intricate designs and abstract shapes while her mind wandered. She felt the Phoenix's presence, quiet but always observant, offering the occasional snarky comment about the lesson.
Jules was only half paying attention. Her sketchbook was open, and her pencil moved almost on its own as she doodled small designs and abstract patterns. The lesson was important, sure, but drawing helped her focus better.
"I see you've taken up art as a distraction," the Phoenix noted in her mind, its tone teasing yet gentle. "Shouldn't you be paying more attention? You never know when a grammar emergency might arise."
"I'm multitasking," Jules shot back with a faint smile, refusing to be pulled from her calm state.
Present Mic suddenly turned his attention toward the back of the classroom. "KUROYAMA! What's the difference between a transitive and intransitive verb? Enlighten us, WILL YA?!"
Jules blinked and looked up from her sketchbook. She could feel Shoto Todoroki's icy gaze on her, as if he was hoping she'd mess up. They hadn't exactly gotten along since her arrival. Their argument from the day before still lingered in the back of her mind, but she brushed it off.
Jules sat up calmly and answered, "A transitive verb requires a direct object to complete its meaning, while an intransitive verb doesn't."
Present Mic beamed. "CORRECT-A-MUNDO! You're on FIRE, Kuroyama! But not literally-leave that to Endeavor's kid."
The class laughed, but Jules simply shook her head and returned to her drawing with a small smile. She could sense Todoroki's gaze still fixed on her, and for a moment, she glanced in his direction, catching his narrowed eyes before turning away. She wasn't interested in whatever he was silently stewing over.
The Phoenix hummed in her mind, almost amused. "You've made an impression on him. But not all eyes need to be on you, little flame."
Lunch arrived quickly, and as Jules packed up her things, Uraraka came over with a friendly smile. "Hey, Jules! Some of us are heading to the cafeteria together. Want to join us?"
