She sat cross-legged on the floor, the remnants of her late-night study session scattered around her. Textbooks lay open haphazardly, notes scribbled in margins, and the glowing screen of her Stark-tech tablet illuminated her face in the dim room. A half-eaten slice of pizza sat abandoned on a plate nearby, forgotten as her mind raced faster than her pen had during the night's study session.
But it wasn't the festival itself that made her uneasy. Jules had been through more intense trials than this—she'd sparred with the Avengers, faced down deadly foes, and grown up under the shadow of her father, Tony Stark. No, it wasn't the competition that rattled her. What gnawed at her was the relentless buzzing in her mind, the constant reminder that her every move could land her in tomorrow's headlines. Being Tony Stark's daughter meant her life was always a spectacle, one wrong step and the media would be all over her. And with the arrival of her best friend, Pietro, things were bound to get even more complicated.
Jules hadn't seen Pietro in person for weeks. Sure, they kept in touch—video calls, quick texts, memes sent back and forth during odd hours—but that wasn't the same as having him around. His energy was infectious, his personality impossible to ignore. The mere thought of him crashing at her place for the festival made her smile. She could already hear the faint echo of his footsteps as he raced up the apartment building's stairs, not bothering with the elevator.
The corner of her lips tugged into a smile, rare and unbidden. She knew that any second now—
Bang! The door flew open with a gust of wind and a blur of white and silver shot into the room like a human tornado.
"Jules!" Pietro's voice rang out, echoing with excitement and a hint of his signature mischief. Before she could blink, he was already across the room, his arms scooping her up in a whirlwind of movement.
"Pietro!" Jules laughed, the sound genuine and light, something that rarely happened these days. She hugged him tightly, her feet barely grazing the ground as he spun her around in his usual over-the-top greeting. "Put me down, you maniac!"
Finally, he set her back on her feet, though his hands remained on her shoulders as he looked her up and down, checking for any signs of change. His sharp blue eyes twinkled with amusement. "I told you I'd get here faster than your dad's jet. Admit it, you missed me."
Jules rolled her eyes, but the smile on her face betrayed her. "Only a little. You've been gone for weeks. I was starting to wonder if you were avoiding me."
