Having just wrapped up an interview, Jules felt the leftover tension starting to ease. Goose, perched on her shoulder with his fluffy orange fur, purred contentedly as he observed the bustling crowd.
They stopped at a cotton candy stand, the bright swirls of pink and blue catching Pietro's eye immediately. He nudged Jules with a mischievous grin. "We have to get some of this. You know it's basically a law."
"Is that so?" Jules teased, playfully rolling her eyes as Pietro dramatically nodded, his silver hair catching the light.
As they laughed and ordered a few sticks of cotton candy, Jules couldn't help but feel a comforting sense of normalcy—a rare feeling for her. She tore off a piece of the candy, offering some to Goose, who sniffed it curiously before swatting at it with his paw, earning a chuckle from Pietro.
"Seems like Goose isn't a fan," he commented, taking a bite of his own cotton candy.
"More for us, then," Jules said, grinning as she took a bite, the sugar melting on her tongue. She felt eyes on them and glanced around, catching sight of a few heroes patrolling nearby, subtly keeping watch over them. Jules waved at one of them, who smiled and nodded in acknowledgment.
As they strolled further, talking and laughing, Jules sensed a faint yet familiar presence in her mind—the Phoenix, ever-watchful, its voice slipping into her thoughts.
"You enjoy this simplicity, little flame, but you are far from simple. Remember, your true nature will never rest, no matter how much you try to hide among mortals."
Jules held her smile, masking her inner reaction to the Phoenix's voice. She'd learned not to let it show, not in front of her friends. She took a steadying breath, shoving the entity's words to the back of her mind, focusing on Pietro's enthusiastic chatter instead.
In the distance, Shoto Todoroki leaned against a tree, watching them quietly. He hadn't intended to eavesdrop, but he couldn't help but notice how relaxed and happy Jules looked. The sight stirred something unfamiliar inside him—a tinge of jealousy he couldn't quite shake.
Seeing Pietro close to her, laughing and enjoying the moment, Shoto's gaze lingered, and his fingers tightened around the stem of a leaf he held. His mind drifted to moments he'd shared with Jules, his admiration for her, the unspoken connection they sometimes seemed to have. But watching her now, surrounded by Pietro's playful energy and Goose's curious gaze, he wondered if maybe he had already missed his chance.
Meanwhile, Jules noticed a few people approaching her and Pietro, recognizing them as fans who had spotted her from her interview. Before they could get too close, a few heroes on patrol stepped in to maintain some space, reminding them politely to keep their distance. Jules offered them a warm smile and waved, grateful for their enthusiasm.
