We walked
to a breath in the trees
a vein of air in a clammy canopy
it's body a dense sentence that we
punctuate with our toes
indenting the prose with commas
snatched in the curling leaves
leaving in our clasped hands
a semicolon; keep walking
my love keep walking
upon the adjective because
you're not yet done with the noun
or the now, here it is -
the conjunction, for we are but vines
dancing verbs climbing the darkness
reaching for the light and the owl in flight
a stanza away, a couplet to the night and
oh, the moon! injects the sky with
a memory of the day; keep climbing
my love, the vine, keep climbing
and shining - the stars say smile
and a while away, time gasps
so the trees exhale
now minutes are paragraphs and
seconds sew sentences
so we sew ourselves, as verbs, into the sky
trailing the adverbs, the shooting star
weaves our names into stardust and dashes
our fear of fading - forgotten, backward
slash your tears with
hope, hyphen the moon -
look, it's a mirror and
it's music, you see
it's a melody strung by the howling wind
the wolf's mouth
tempting and timeless
and no gasping time can ever steal its rhyme
and no darkness can quell its beauty
and you see the magic, or are you the magic?
believe it
we picnic beneath the green stars and remember
why birds sing, too clever
attuned to the dark, though ears abandon
their silent sonnet
so be it
we walked
to the moon
astronauts in assonance, oh how we float
we waltzed in the craters
cracked them, filled them with liquid air
no fair, we share starlit lies
gravity sighs, never goodbyes
the stars bled petals that rose to our eyes
no surprise I suppose
that now the moon blooms in your iris
an ellipses...
keeping breathing my love;
my love keep living
