"May I have this dance, my lady?"
I stare at the outstretched hand in front of me. The guy offering his hand is young, about my age, and cute. His blond hair falls over his eyes, giving it a messy yet effortless look, and his blue eyes sparkle with life. Should I say no? But if I say no wouldn't he be offended? However I am saved from the decision making by my knight in shining armor, Rex. "No," he gruffed pulling me by my waist to stand closer to him.
I frown at his brutish behavior and pinch his arm. "Don't be mean," I whisper furiously to him before smiling at the cute guy. "I'm sorry, he gets a little cranky."
Cute guy laughed. "No it's alright, I get it. I'm James," he forwards his hands again but this time for a handshake.
Rex was going to butt in again and smack his hand away, but this time I'm faster. I grasp James' hand and shake. "I'm Lily."
James' eyes scrunch around the eyes as he smiles, his eyes getting a mischievous look. "Well then we should get married and have a son named Harry."
I giggle, my cheeks flaming red. But Rex doesn't find it very funny because he growls and pulls me even closer to him. "Stop flirting with my girlfriend or I'll punch you," he threatens.
James laughs in return. "Sorry man-" he raises his hands in a surrendering motion "-chill."
I hit Rex's chest softly. "He was joking. It's a Harry Potter reference." I try to explain it to him but he wasn't having any of it. He was content glaring at poor James. I sigh, shaking my head. He's impossible.

I was twirling in my father's arms in the dance floor when my eyes fall on Rex. Poor guy looks sad.
After the song is over, dad goes to dance with mom again and I approach Rex. "Hey."
He smiled at me. "Hi."
"I noticed you looked pretty lonely."
He smirked. "Yes, I am lonely. I have no one to dance with."
I giggled. "Well, I can fix your problem."
"Really?" He gave me a seductive smirk, trying to grab my hand but I moved away.
I turn around and place my arm around the old woman. "This is Jane, she thinks you're very handsome. She asked me if you'd like to dance with her."
Rex narrows his eyes at me before nodding and extending his arms to Jane. He gently guided her to the dance floor. It is a peculiar sight, Rex towering over the woman with his 6'4 height and yet somehow the tiny woman seemed to ooze confidence and dictated the whole direction of their dance.
I giggle as my eyes meet Rex's. 'I'll get back at you,' he mouths and I wink at him in response.
After he's done dancing with Jane, Rex stomps towards me. I try to make a run for it but he grabbed me by my waist, encircling his arms around me. "Rex, let me go. Someone will see us."
He frowned. "So?" He lead me to the dance floor, swaying with the music. "Do you not want to tell anyone?"
I bite my lower lip nervously. "It's just, you know, Aiden will get mad. And dad too. I just -"
He nodded. "No I get it. I'm not exactly the type of guy you take home to your parents."
"Yeah," I mumble with an apologetic smile.
"It's fine. But uh- I should tell you though, I already told my parents."
"What? When?" I ask incredulously. "You were with me the whole time!"
"I texted them."
I let out an exasperated sigh. "Alright but don't tell anyone else."
"Sure."
We danced the whole night, earning a suspicious look from my mom. Dad and Aiden were oblivious, of course, which was great.
Then when the count down started Rex snaked his hand around my waist, pulling me flush against him, my back pressed to his front. And right at the stroke of midnight, he turned me to face him.
Before I can respond, Rex closes the gap and captures my mouth in a searing kiss. His tongue delves past my parted lips, exploring the depths of my mouth with a hunger that borders on desperation. His one hand slides up my side, fingers splaying across my ribcage as he pulls me flush against his body. The other hand tangles in my hair, angling my head to deepen the kiss further. Breaking away momentarily, he gazes intently into my eyes, his own dark with love and longing. "Happy New Year, baby."
My cheeks heat up as I shyly peek at him from under my lashes. "Happy New Year," I squeak.
