I was excited. Very very excited. And happy. So very happy. Overjoyed, actually. Lily Thompson is now my girlfriend, what could be better than this? Nothing. Nothing beats this feeling.
After years of staring at her, and convincing myself that I don't deserve her, she's finally mine. Everything is beautiful now. Life is just perfect.
And I am excited about our future together. I even have the wedding planned. I've actually had this wedding planned since I met her for the first time. It was just after the Thompsons came back home with their third and latest addition to the family. I remember that little bundle of pink. She looked like a squashed potato, according to Aiden. But I thought she looked like an angel, my angel. So I said that, of course, to my friend of two and a half years, Aiden. But even the two year old, almost three, Aiden was strong. He hit me in the ribs and said I should never look at his sister.
Of course I looked. I looked at wondered. I looked an allowed myself to be delusional, to plan our wedding. But that's all I ever allowed myself, because I knew my limits. I did not deserve an angel. But she's mine now.
I was literally floating around the whole day. I can't believe Lily's now my girlfriend. I feel like singing.
She talks kinda lazy
And people say she's crazy
And her life's a mystery
Oh, but love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like meThere's something about her hand holding mine
It's a feeling that's fine
And I just gotta say, hey
She's really got a magical spell
And it's working so well
That I can't get awayI'm a lucky fella
And I've just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly
Because love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like meThis is the song we'll have our first dance to on our wedding day. I sigh contentedly.
"Rex," dad's gruff voice made me stop swinging my hips while singing.
"Yes, dad?"
"Stop singing. You have a bad voice."
I blinked. Bad voice? I try to come up with a retort but nothing comes to mind. What do you even say when your own father says you sound horrible?
"Elijah, don't be mean." Mom admonished. "Our baby's just happy." She then tugged me towards her, wrapping her arms around me. "I'm so happy for you baby," she cooed, kissing my cheek.
I smile down at her. "I'm so happy, mom."
"Oh, my baby." She kissed my whole face. "I can see how happy you are."
Dad grunted and suddenly pulled mom away from me. Jealous.
"Now that you have your own girlfriend, I trust you'll leave my wife alone," he asked like the jealous guy he is.
"Your wife is my mother."
"Shut up."
I roll my eyes and go back to humming and swinging my hips.
___
"Rex."
I was snapped out of my thoughts when Aiden flicked my forehead. "What?"
"Hot chick at 7 o'clock," he tilted his head, gesturing to that direction.
However, for the first time in my life, I'm not interested. I no longer need other girls to distract me, I have the one I wanted. So I don't even turn to glance in that direction. "Nah."
Aiden blinked in surprise. "But she's exactly your type." He turned to glance at the girl once more. "Yeah, tall, blonde, blue eyes, classic Rex-type."
I down my drink in one go. "Another," I ask the bartender before turning to face Aiden. "Not interested."
"Why not?"
Oh how I wish to tell him! But what would I tell him? I'm dating your sister now? He'd kill me. So I just shrug in response.
But that's good enough for Aiden, so he shrugs dismissively before scouting the bar for a girl to hook up with. "Hey, I bet I can get her number," he tugs my sleeve to get me to look.
And I wish I hadn't looked. The girl's clearly not straight. "Man, I don't think you can."
"Watch me."
So I watch as he sauntered off to talk to that girl, and after a while of talking he did manage to come back with a number. "Is that her real number?"
"Yeah."
"I don't think so."
Aiden glared at me before dialing the number. A gruff male voice floated off the speaker. "Who is it?"
I poked the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing as Aiden tried to apologize to the unrelenting man. "Pay up."
He glared at me once more. "For what?"
"You bet that you'd be able to get her number. You didn't."
"Yeah so?"
"So pay me."
Aiden snorted in response. "No."
Stingy asshole. "Fine then pick up the bar tab at least."
"No, you drink like a pig. I bet you've already drank like a thousand dollars."
I just shook my head, and watched throughout the night as Aiden approached un-gettable woman and got shot down, before he finally gave up and went away with a redhead.
