"Whatchu packin' for?"
Backing out his closet and carrying his KENZO hoodie on the hanger, Troy gaze shot to his twelve-year-old brother Avant laying on his high bed. "For up north; I told y'all." he said, folding his hoodie and tossing it into his duffel bag.
"How long you gon' be out there?" Avant asked, smacking on his candy and peeking into his brother's duffel. "Look like you packed for a week."
Troy chuckled lightly. "Nah just two outfits and socks and boxers; shit I need."
"Mhm. Who going witchu?"
"Mama." he revealed, noticing his brothers awkward closed smile and worry in his eyes. "I know; everybody expressed how they felt and I'm giving her a real chance here."
"I mean.. I get it.. enough." Avant shrug his shoulders up, tossing Skittles into his mouth. "I don't like her off the strength of the way she did you; but she alive. Everybody want they Mama. I be wishing mine was still alive."
Troy felt the sadness waft off his young brother. He zipped his duffel and asked, "Been thinkin' bout yo' mama?"
"Everyday." Avant sighed, folding his candy up; out of the mood to eat them. "It's been three years and it feel like it was yesterday. You know we was posed to move back in with her."
"Oh y'all was?"
"Yeah. She was talk to pops bout it, even though he was locked up around the time. She respected him enough not to just take us away from Uncle Tae."
"On me! I fucked wit Doris." Troy smiled, thinking about his little brother's mother. "She was solid, and I hope you and Guppie know she didn't just leave y'all wit Pops and say 'fuck y'all' and just went to live her life. She was active and raised y'all. Shit, the beginning of y'all life y'all was living in Nevada with her. She never missed a weekend."
"Yeahhh I remember. Pops tell us not to question God all the time; but dang. Just the way she had to go."
"Yeah life guaranteed to be one unfair mutha fucka and I hate this something I can fix for you and Guppie. Do you talk to him about it?" he asked, and Avant shook his head.
"He be super busy."
"If anybody can understand what you dealin' wit; it's Hendrick. Don't not call him cause you don't wanna feel like you invading him. He probably waitin' on you to call him and talk about it."
"Ima call him today." Avant said, promising himself. "You gonna be good out there in—where you goin?"
"San Francisco, and yeah Ima be good, boy. I'm going for business."
