"Look at my man-man!" Her father, Asante, spoke happily with the front door of his home opened.
Allowing her father to take the carseat from her hand, Courtney gave him a hug and noticed the boxes in the foyer. Her eyebrows pulled together in confusion as she closed the front door. "Y'all doing some moving I don't know about?" she asked just for her father to exhale sharply and shake his head. She knew off of that alone there was gossip to tell and involved her stepsister.
"What did Shonny do now?" she asked, sliding the diaper bag strap down her arm and sat it on the couch.
"That girl," he started, placing his grandson carefully on chest. "Her and that li'l boyfriend of hers got into it how they stay doin. Me and yo' uncles had to roll up over there."
"No way."
"Yea' man," Asante went on, pacing slowly to soothe Valero back to sleep. "I take it they was doin' that fightin' shit, twelve got called. She called her mama cryin' and shit. That apartment was all fucked up. She had forty-eight hours to get out. We finished gettin' all her shit moved in today."
"So her dude's in jail?"
"Yea', LA County."
Courtney exhaled heavily. "I hope she doesn't go back. But you know how those things go. I cant judge cause I had my fair share of difficult relationships. I do think you and Uncle's should stay out of it. I know that you've been her dad for years but those situations; others get hurt first. We both know about losing someone for being at the wrong place at the wrong time."
Thinking of his first love, Asante softened his expression. "I know... Y'all my daughters. I would neva' stand by and watch no nigga disrespect y'all. But, I do get whatchu sayin'."
"Where's Shonny now?" she asked.
"With her mama and Cayla." he mentioned, taking a seat on the couch with a light grunt. "Now, you gonna tell me where you goin' and why Man-Man ain't goin? Don't get me wrong, I love watchin' this li'l dude."
"I told you I was invited to a event with the Bookers... by Troy."
"One of Toby's twins?" she nodded, and he went on. "And he can't go?"
"It's not that. He was invited but I chose not to accept it on his behalf. His sister is Toby's wife—It's.. complicated, and everyone doesn't know about him."
"I mean you can't hide 'em forever, Coke. Don't you think you and her need to sit down and chop it up? She might wanna meet her brotha."
"I know. Just not at that event. It's getting thrown for his Grandma and I'm not gonna bring that there."
