The air was thick with anticipation as Ji Ah sat in the dark corner of the farmhouse, her masked face hidden from view. The low hum of distant crickets was the only sound filling the silence. Outside, the moon hung low in the sky, casting shadows across the fields. It had been nearly an hour since Taehyung's stepmother had arrived, and Ji Ah had yet to make her move.
The older woman paced the room, her heels clicking softly against the worn wooden floor. She seemed uneasy, her sharp eyes scanning the empty space, but Ji Ah remained unseen, cloaked in darkness. The woman's impatience grew with each passing second.
"Who called me here?" Taehyung's stepmother muttered under her breath, her voice laced with irritation. "I don't have time for these games."
Ji Ah's lips curled into a small smile beneath the mask. Impatient, as always. She had been watching Taehyung's stepmother for years, studying her every move, understanding her strengths—and her weaknesses. Today, the time had come to exploit them.
She let the tension simmer, allowing Taehyung's stepmother to become even more uncomfortable. Then, finally, Ji Ah stepped forward from the shadows, the black dress she wore flowing silently around her. The older woman turned sharply, eyes narrowing.
"Who are you?" Taehyung's stepmother demanded, her tone more curious than afraid.
Ji Ah said nothing at first, simply standing before her. The mask she wore concealed her identity, and not a single feature was exposed beneath the flowing fabric of her dress. After a long, pregnant pause, Ji Ah tilted her head slightly.
"You know why you're here," she said, her voice low and distorted through the mask. "But what you don't know... is what happens next."
The woman stiffened, eyes darting around the room as if searching for a hidden answer. "Enough with the theatrics. Tell me what you want."
Ji Ah took a slow, deliberate step forward, the dim light flickering across the mask's surface. "I want to talk about your sins," she whispered.
The woman's expression faltered. "What... what are you talking about?"
Ji Ah moved closer, each step bringing her closer to the truth she'd waited so long to reveal. "You think no one knows the role you played. You think the past is buried." Her voice was calm, but the words held the weight of secrets too long hidden.
As Ji Ah removed her mask, the soft rustle of fabric echoed in the quiet farmhouse. Taehyung's stepmother, who had been standing tall just moments before, suddenly felt her legs buckle beneath her. She collapsed to the ground, her body trembling uncontrollably. Her vision blurred, her hands shook, and her throat tightened as if the air itself had been stolen from her lungs.
Her mind raced, trying to process the impossible sight before her.
Ji Ah... alive?
It couldn't be. This had to be a trick. Her heart pounded in her chest, each beat filling her with a cold dread. She tried to speak, to form words, but her throat was dry, as though the shock had paralyzed her. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
