Ever since you knew your power, you made me cry
And now every time our love goes sour, you won't sympathize
You see these tears falling down to my ears
I swear you like when I'm in pain,

"He still hasn't called?" I asked Mari as I set my MacBook Pro onto the island while situating myself on the cushioned bar stool. We were having one of our many FaceTime check-ins of the week.

She looked to be in better spirits since the last time we spoke. I could see that a little bit of life had returned to her eyes which I was grateful for. She had been through hell over the last few months but was still one of the strongest people I knew. I admired how her tenacity was always present no matter what she may have been going through. She had been through damn near the same circumstances as me but was still standing tall. I looked up to her more than she could ever know. I wished I could be as strong as she was with all that life had thrown her way.

"Yeah, girl that man finally called." Amarie says, rolling her eyes but I could see the slight smirk gracing her lips letting me know she was happy about finally talking to Chris.

"Oh, that's why you glowin' bitch! Period! How's he doing?" I asked, concerned with his well-being, specifically his mental health. I could only imagine how hard it was to be away from your loved ones and have no idea when you would be able to make it back to them and don't get me started on how poorly black men are treated in the prison pipeline. I hoped he was keeping his spirits high as best he could.

"Okay yes, bitch I'm in better spirits now that I heard my husband's voice." Amarie chuckles. "He's alright, seems much better. We're still working to get him out. Did I tell you Lawrence is switching to his lead counsel? We're just waiting for the motion hearing."

"I'm so happy to hear that! I'm glad he stopped being stubborn about Lawrence being his lead counsel. That nigga been makin' my stomach hurt." I joked, making her laugh.

"He's been making all our stomachs hurt and heads pound but that's Christopher for you." She shrugged while shaking her head, making us both laugh. I was really happy that they were back on good terms. I couldn't say the same for me and my relationship. It had been two months since Dominic's birthday and things had gotten so bad between us. We barely spoke to one another unless I was taking him to his physical therapy appointments or helping him shower.

"So you know how you told me you have been thinking about getting a job to cover some of your expenses?" I asked softly, trying to tread lightly because I knew this was a difficult topic for her. She was extremely independent just like me, so to need help financially because their assets were frozen was a tough pill for her to swallow.

"Yeah...." She said, sighing deeply letting me see the physical toll this was taking on her. It hurt to see her struggling so hard just to pay for the bare minimum. She had let me know that Ty hadn't been much help which was disheartening especially since Chris was in jail so he wouldn't have to be. The least he could do was help Mari with some of her finances.
