Spoilers for SM2. This takes place post James' bad ending.

"I...accept my fate..."

Even decades later, the sheer memory of speaking those words was enough to shatter James' heart again and again. The sight of his love, Mika, being pulled into the portal for angels was always in the back of his mind, never leaving. If he closed his eyes, he would see Mika there, her beautiful green eyes looking at him. Her bright smile and blush she'd get when he told her he loved her. When the room was too quiet, he'd hear her reply, those three sweet words falling from her lips.

It was eating him alive from the inside out, and he made no attempt to stop it. He didn't feel as though he deserved to be happy or forgiven. Perhaps that was why he made no effort to make his brothers stay. He didn't deserve their comfort or pity, nor did he want it. He wanted to be left alone, to succumb to the madness that Mika's love had kept away for so long.

He'd used magic to check on her. He never made any attempt to contact her in fear of infuriating the angels, but he'd watch her from afar. He saw as she moved on with her life, found herself a new partner and had children with him. It made his body shake to see her so happy, to know that he was no longer the reason she smiled.

So, when he thought too hard about the decision to give her up to the angels, he'd feel his chest ache with regret and shame. He'd recall every decision he'd made, dissect each one and attempt to find the root cause for this mess.

Perhaps it was his decision to leave the demon world in the first place. If he hadn't done that, she would have never been in constant danger, and she would have never lost her memories. But the selfish part of him refused to regret their meeting. He hated to think of a world where he never met her.

Even though Mika was no longer his, his heart, body, and soul would always be hers.
