Chapter 9: The Final Goodbye (2017)

The soft glow of the evening sun filtered through the sheer curtains of Y/N and Elizabeth’s home, casting long shadows across the empty living room. Y/N sat on the couch, her heart racing, eyes fixed on the envelope that sat silently on the coffee table. It felt like the world was closing in on her, the weight of the moment too much to bear. The notification she had received earlier that day echoed in her mind: "New divorce filing."

"Not like this," Y/N whispered, her fingers gently stroking Lucky, her loyal golden retriever, who sat beside her, offering silent comfort. The air around her was heavy with words left unsaid, with the kind of pain that couldn’t be easily explained. Elizabeth had been her anchor for so long, the one person who steadied her in times of chaos. But now, that anchor had snapped.

Time passed, but the silence in the house remained unbroken. Y/N paced the room, each step feeling like an echo in her chest. How had it all unraveled so quickly? Elizabeth had filed for divorce. It felt surreal, like something out of a nightmare.

Suddenly, Y/N’s phone buzzed, breaking through the heavy silence. It was a message from Elizabeth.

“I need to talk. Can you meet me?”

Y/N’s heart clenched in her chest. She stared at the message for a moment before typing a reply: "Where?"

"The coffee shop we used to go to."

Her hands trembled slightly as she typed back, "Okay. I’ll be there."

When Y/N arrived at the coffee shop, the familiar smell of freshly brewed coffee hit her, wrapping around her like a bittersweet memory. Elizabeth was already seated at their usual table, her hands clasped tightly around a steaming mug. As Y/N walked toward her, Elizabeth’s gaze lifted, her eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and resolve.

"Hey," Elizabeth said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Hey," Y/N replied, sitting down across from her. The weight of their shared history hung between them like an invisible wall.

"I know this is hard," Elizabeth began, her voice trembling slightly. "But I need you to understand that filing for divorce wasn’t something I took lightly. It just... felt like the only choice left."

Y/N clenched her fists, her heart aching as she looked at Elizabeth, the woman she had loved for so long. "Why, Liz? We were happy. We had plans," she said, her voice cracking.

Elizabeth’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. "I thought I could make it work, but with everything going on in my career and the pressure I felt, I didn’t know how to be the partner you needed. I’m scared to face you, to admit that I’m failing us."

Y/N shook her head, her emotions bubbling to the surface. "You’re not failing us! We could have faced this together. I trusted you."

"I know," Elizabeth said softly, her voice thick with regret. "And I let you down. I’m so sorry."

The hurt in Y/N’s chest turned into frustration, sharp and unrelenting. "So what now? You just walk away from everything we built?"

"I’m scared, Y/N," Elizabeth confessed, her voice breaking. "I’m scared of the person I’ve become. I need space to figure things out. I can’t keep facing you every day, knowing I’m the one causing this pain."

Y/N’s breath caught in her throat. "You’re leaving me?" she whispered, the words like a knife to her heart.

"I’m asking you to let me go," Elizabeth said, tears streaming down her face. "I can’t do this anymore. Not like this."
